I have started getting inquiries re: my recent article about what happened to the lawyers at Dewey & LeBoeuf after its 2012 implosion. I followed every associate, counsel, and partner who worked at the firm for a decade to see how the collapse affected their careers.

Today my office has released a major new report on student enrollment in NYC. We found that k-12 enrollment in our public schools has fallen by 187k since 2013, with a projected decline of an additional 128k students by 2034. As total enrollment declines, NYCPS is serving a student population with growing needs. The number of students with disabilities is increasing. In the most recent school year, approximately 73% of students were in poverty and 14% were homeless or living in temporary housing. Our report finds the drop in enrollment is driven by declining births and families with children leaving NYC, with a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school. These trends have massive implications for our schools that we have only barely begin to grapple with. My hope is that this report will spur a long overdue conversation about what the era of falling student enrollment means for NYC, and what we can do to reverse or slow it. 🧵

A 23-page complaint letter? Amateurs.
"You Can See Everything," the genre-bending documentary about convicted Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes, has become a smash hit. Jay Conti, the lead lawyer on WSJ's coverage of the blood-testing company a decade ago, shares what it was like to vet the investigation.

This website built by @noble1noble1 counts how much Sam Bankman-Fried's investments would be worth today. Unlike a lot of other calculations I've seen, it accounts for dilution in Anthropic shares, which a lot of other people missed. SBF's stake in Anthropic would still be worth nearly twice Dario Amodei's. Wild. sbfindex.com/

I'm fascinated by a weird ad for Muse @milkkarten spotted on Instgram, claiming it could help you see who unfollowed you. Which, it can, but that's a feature Instagram has repeatedly said it doesn't want users to have. (Meta has taken down the ad). A curious tension here: AI agents and social media aren't necessarily playing nice. There's things Muse can do for users that is at the detriment to the health of the social platforms. So what balance does Meta strike to make sure the new shiny thing isn't cannibalizing the old profitable thing? businessinsider.com/muse-ad-…

NEW: Two years ago, the Odyssey set sail. It billed itself as an endless cruise ship, where residents could buy cabins and spend the rest of their lives in a floating luxury hotel that would circumnavigate the globe every few years. The finances were stormy, but things were looking up for 2016. Then the Iran war started. Fuel prices shot up. Scylla and Charybdis moved in. This week, the cruise shut down operations. Residents disembarked in Cambodia. Here's the inside story, written with @TheNewsHam:

Judge Hellerstein was a giant of SDNY. He oversaw much of the post-9/11 litigation. In the past couple of hearings in the Maduro case, the 92-year-old judge didn't look too great. He seemed to struggle to speak. He used a cane, and an employee helped him get up the stairs to the bench.
Alvin Hellerstein, the longtime federal judge in Manhattan who was overseeing the prosecution of deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, died this morning, per court spox: politico.com/news/2026/10/28…

Law firm goes to the doctor, says its partners are leaving and it’s worried the firm will disintegrate. The doctor says “treatment is simple. The great restructuring firm Weil is available tonight. Go and see them for advice on your options” “But doctor…”
New color on what went down this weekend at Weil, a culmination of issues that have been plaguing the white-shoe law firm for years. Over 40 partners gone, M&A talks with Willkie over, and top brass is calling outside restructuring counsel for advice. You hate to see it.

Wow
So @TylerShultz_ as a Theranos whistleblower. And he wrote the piece you need to read about ‘You Can See Everything.’ Elizabeth Holmes is still lying, he says. And the filmmakers, while creating a great piece of art, fall short on looking outside the walls of her apartment to document that. One key detail: "My wife had to squeeze my arm to prevent me from jumping out of my seat in the theater and screaming, THAT IS NOT THE DEVICE." Again, that device Holmes showed? It's not the one we're talking about!!!! Having seen the film, I basically agree with Tyler's take. statnews.com/2026/10/19/eliz…
