Bridging Asia and Europe through a landmark railway project. The OPEC Fund is joining an international effort to close a critical missing link in rail connectivity between two continents, with a US$250 million loan for the Istanbul North Rail Crossing in Türkiye. The project will deliver a new 127 km railway line bypassing the Istanbul Metropolitan Area, providing a high-capacity crossing over the Bosphorus and strengthening trade links between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. A historic milestone for the OPEC Fund: Our US$250 million loan forms part of an approved financing package of up to US$500 million, the largest in our institution’s history to date. “Türkiye has been an important partner of the OPEC Fund for nearly five decades and our cooperation continues to grow in scale and ambition. This record financing marks a new milestone in our partnership and reflects our shared commitment to infrastructure that strengthens connectivity, competitiveness and sustainable growth,” said our President Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa. The US$8.3 billion project brings together an international group of financing partners led and administered by the @WorldBankGroup, including @ADB_HQ, @AIIB_Official, @isdb_group, @EBRD and @EIB, alongside the Government of Türkiye. Water security is essential to economic growth, public health and food security. But how do we turn growing investment needs into action? At the high-level roundtable “From Bangkok to Abu Dhabi: Translating Country Compacts to Investments,” held during the @IMFNews & @WorldBankGroup Annual Meetings, our Vice President, Public Sector Operations, Shaimaa Al-Sheiby highlighted the need to move beyond individual projects toward large-scale, country-led water investment programs. Co-convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our member country, the UAE @mofauae, and the World Bank Group, in partnership with Children's Investment Fund Foundation @CIFFchild, the event brought together governments, development institutions and private sector partners ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi. Drawing on five decades of experience and over US$1.9 billion in approved water and sanitation financing, Ms. Al-Sheiby highlighted the OPEC Fund's commitment of an additional US$1 billion to the Water Forward initiative by 2030, expected to benefit a further 15 million people. “The OPEC Fund stands ready to help turn that ambition into lasting impact,” Ms. Al-Sheiby emphasized.
