Silverstone de 2022: Ferrari le pidió que dejara un hueco de 10 coches con su compañero Charles Leclerc durante la resalida del coche de seguridad y él consideró que esa instrucción era contraproducente.
Contexto: Tras el safety car, Sainz llevaba neumáticos blandos nuevos y tenía detrás a Lewis Hamilton, también con blandos y muy rápido. Ferrari quería que Sainz se rezagara para proteger a Leclerc, que iba líder con duros. Sainz se negó porque, si abría ese hueco, perdía el rebufo de Leclerc y dejaba a ambos expuestos a un ataque de Hamilton. Su razonamiento fue: si Hamilton lo pasaba a él, después también se comería a Leclerc.
