A shadow and a well measured the whole Earth. Around 240 BC l, Eratosthenes learned that at noon on the solstice, the Sun shone straight down a well in Syene. At the same moment in Alexandria, shadows fell at 7.2°, one fiftieth of a circle.

In 1735, Leonhard Euler solved a mathematical problem that had remained unsolved for nearly a century. He discovered that this infinite sum equals π²/6.

The Feynman point, named after the physicist Richard Feynman, is a famous mathematical coincidence: a sequence of six consecutive 9s in the decimal representation of π, starting at the 762nd decimal place.

Over 500 years ago, Indian mathematician Nilakantha Somayaji discovered this beautiful infinite series for π. It starts with 3 and approaches π through an infinite pattern of fractions.

Between 1820 and 1900, real GDP per capita in the United States grew eightfold. No welfare state. No central bank. No income tax. The federal government consumed less than 3% of GDP for most of that period, and the results speak for themselves. Secure property rights, contract enforcement, and a commodity-backed dollar created the conditions where capital formation exploded. Entrepreneurs knew that what they built, they kept. John D. Rockefeller drove kerosene prices from 58 cents per gallon in 1865 to under 8 cents by 1885, delivering affordable light to millions of ordinary households, not through government mandate but through relentless productive competition. Real wages for manufacturing workers doubled between 1860 and 1890. Immigration surged because workers across Europe calculated, correctly, that their labor earned more in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh than anywhere in the old world. Markets made that signal clear. Critics point to inequality, child labor, and dangerous working conditions, ignoring that mass poverty preceded industrial capitalism. Andrew Carnegie's Pittsburgh was brutal, but it was also dramatically better than the subsistence farming the workers' grandparents had endured. The railroad network grew from 9,000 miles in 1850 to over 160,000 miles by 1890, financed almost entirely by private capital once you exclude the genuinely corrupt land-grant subsidies, which free market thinkers condemned at the time. State intervention produced scandals; private lines produced the freight. Minimal government produced the fastest sustained material improvement in recorded human history to that point.

Illustration of the irrationality of π. Two arms rotate, one π times as fast as the other. If π were a ratio of two whole numbers, both arms would eventually realign and the curve would close. Since π is irrational, the curve never closes and never repeats.

1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + ... grows forever, but slowly. To pass 100 you need about 1.5 × 10⁴³ terms. If you’d added one term every second since the Big Bang, you’d be at about 41.

🚨 MILTON FRIEDMAN & THOMAS SOWELL debate two leftists on "Equality" and what role Govt should play, if any (1979, University of Chicago): "The society that puts equality before Freedom will end up with neither, the society that puts Freedom before equality will end up with a great deal of both". Do you believe Govt should force equal outcomes or allow Individuals to have Freedom?

30 years ago, John Stossel asked why San Diego schools weren’t using Direct Instruction to address students’ struggles in reading and math. The superintendent’s response? Classrooms should be “more than just worksheets and multiplication facts.” When Stossel pointed out that kids weren’t mastering basic skills, she cited rising graduation rates. His retort: “You’re graduating them, but they can’t read.” Fast forward to today, the reflex remains the same: When students aren't academically proficient, deflect to gameable metrics.

It’s impossible to reason with people who have no idea what evidence and logic actually mean—who mistake feelings for facts and believe anyone who disagrees must have evil motives.
