ARSENAL, THE MEDIA AND THE GROWING OBSESSION WITH FINDING SOMETHING TO CRITICISE
There was a time when football journalism was about analysing the game, recognising good football and holding clubs and players accountable when things went wrong. Sadly, an increasing amount of mainstream football coverage is heading in a very different direction.
Over the past 18 months, Arsenal have become one of the biggest talking points in English football, but not always for the reasons you might expect.
Whether it's BBC Sport, Sky Sports, talkSPORT or former professionals on podcasts and TV, there seems to be a familiar pattern: just find something to criticise about Arsenal and turn it into a talking point, whether it's true or not.
Arsenal are a massive football club and current Premier League champions. Of course they will attract attention and generate debate. That comes with the territory. But there's a difference between true football criticism and what increasingly feels like an obsession with finding fault in any way possible.
Last season, we had everyone moaning about Arsenal's set pieces. The 'Set Piece FC' label became a regular feature of football coverage, with every corner providing another opportunity to take a pop at Mikel Arteta and his team.
Since when did being good at something become a reason to slag off a football team? You make your own mind up on that one.
Nobody complains when a striker scores 25 goals in a season, a goalkeeper keeps 20 clean sheets or a midfielder dominates the centre of the pitch. Yet when Arsenal develop a genuine weapon from set pieces, the conversation changes. Now the Gunners have scored just one set-piece goal out of 28. Will the point be made by mainstream media? Of course not.
The same applies to the scrutiny of Arteta himself. His touchline behaviour, celebrations, tactical decisions and personality have all become regular subjects of criticism.
And it isn't just the manager. Declan Rice, one of the finest midfielders in world football, has found himself on the receiving end of criticism that at times seems difficult to reconcile with his performances. Other Arsenal players have similarly been subjected to narratives that appear to follow them.
Jamie O'Hara, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and others have all contributed to the wider debate around Arsenal. They're entitled to their opinions, just like everyone else. But when does honest analysis become something put aside just to attract attention?
The problem isn't that Arsenal are criticised. Every club should be scrutinised, particularly when expectations are high. The problem is whether the same standards are being applied elsewhere.
When Arsenal lose, the discussion can quickly become a stupid debate on Arteta, the players and the entire project. When they win, there's sometimes another reason to question how they've done it.
Arsenal reached the final, having won the Premier League, and took Paris Saint-Germain to a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. They ultimately fell short, but that shouldn't diminish what was an outstanding European campaign.
There is also a wider issue beyond Arsenal. Football is increasingly consumed through short clips, headlines and soundbites. The louder the opinion, the more likely it is to attract attention, often at the expense of balanced analysis.
My biggest concern is the younger generation of football supporters. They're growing up listening to former professionals and broadcasters who should be helping them understand the game. Instead, too often, the discussion revolves around controversy, ridicule and arguments designed to provoke a reaction.
Arsenal supporters aren't asking the media to praise their club every week. They're not asking for special treatment. They simply want the same level of fairness that every football club deserves.
Football supporters deserve better than that.
And it's about time somebody said it. And put these idiots in their places.

Marks & Spencer and John Lewis might have their Christmas adverts, but Arsenal have put them both in the shade – just like their rivals on the football pitch! 😉

Graeme Souness's opinion on Declan Rice has to be one of the worst football takes I've heard in years.
Describing his football as 'old man's football', questioning whether he's actually a midfield player, suggesting he might be better suited to centre-half, questioning his technical ability and even whether he'd get into Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Manchester City's team.
It belongs in the same conversation as Stuart Pearce claiming Dennis Bergkamp was a waste of money. Honestly, what game are these people watching?
