🧵 It's been one month since I lost sweet little Benz. I'd like to share some pictures of him. He was a precious, loving, gentle little guy who will never be forgotten. Beamer and I still miss him terribly.

How many times do we have to explain this? What part of your brain switched off and convinced you COVID just packed its bags and disappeared? When a magician shows you an empty top hat, do you genuinely believe the rabbit ceased to exist? COVID didn’t disappear. We stopped looking for it, stopped talking about it, and somehow confused silence with safety. Stop calling this a “post-COVID world.” We’re post-emergency declarations. Post-precautions. Post-giving-a-damn, apparently. But we are NOT post-COVID. The rabbit is still here. And at this point, I’m starting to think it’s the only one with object permanence. 🐇🎩

If Trump launches a nuclear attack, this will end the world as we know it. Along with collapsing global markets. And putting the homeland at risk. Trump will go down as the biggest mistake in American history.
Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

We are about to enter some very dark times. When/if Trump breaks the nuclear taboo, anything could happen anywhere. We've built our lives and our civilization on the certainty that no one would be foolish enough to do something like this, yet here we are.

I know everyone loves The Measure of Man but I've been convinced for a while now that some of his best acting was in this random episode from season 5, A Matter of Time. That's pure stage dialogue. He was so good. RIP

During this year, year seven of this pandemic, I have borne witness to horrifying chickens coming home to roost. Sudden deaths. Multiple organ failures. Frightening new diagnoses, especially those related to endothelium damage. Rare cancers. Kids and teens, sports and entertainment people disabled or dropping dead. Multiple reinfections in a single year. Hospital systems collapsing. ERs over-run. What I have not borne witness to is very many people connecting the dots. Please protect yourselves, your kids, your elderly, and your community.

What amazes me is how most people have normalized being infected multiple times a year. In the past they would have been shocked to be infected with the 'flu twice in five years.

I would have loved to had the chance to meet him. I love this story.
I got a photo op with Patrick Stewart at ECCC & just stood next to him 'cause I heard he didn't like to be touched, but then he put his arm around me saying, "Oh, we can get closer than that, darling". That's when they took the photo so I look a little nuts.

Humility. Years ago, I was writing about my incredulity that people had so little, if any, humility in the face of a NOVEL virus, a BSL-3 pathogen. The ultracrepidarians were everywhere. Gobsmacking stupidity. But holidays and FamilyTraditions™, am I right? 🤦‍♀️
An airborne virus does not care if it's a holiday or you think you're special or you get your way in other areas of life. Have some humility.

you all and your bogus “how do i boost my immune system?” posts! just be honest and ask “how do i continue avoiding accountability and taking *active* measures to mitigate rampant airborne viruses without wearing a mufuggin’ mask in the face of this post public health crisis?!”

I wonder how many will be calling out as the week ahead goes on because they are sick or tested positive for Covid. Outdoor transmission in a crowd this big is REAL.
Halloween in New York City is unmatched! 🎃 Tonight’s Village Halloween Parade was incredible! Huge thanks to Jorge, Todd & @thrillernyc for another spectacular Michael Jackson THRILLER finale! One of NYC’s greatest traditions! 🧟‍♂️🗽

Excellent short thread by Conor Browne @brownecfm on the coming risk of early onset neurocognitive diseases after SARSCoV2 infection. Mask up, folks with proper N95+ respirators.
1. The bottom line: SARS-CoV-2 only emerged in late 2019. No-one can know the long-term effects of repeated infections, but with anosmia and cognitive dysfunction as common symptoms, the assumption I make is that there is a tsunami of early-onset neurocognitive diseases coming.

Clearly, they have no idea what they are letting happen to their children. Imagine looking back on your mom's social media posts joking about you "wanting to get sick."
Day before Halloween and the real jump scare is the Covid positive toddler lunging for your candy bowl while mom posts “ofc my child wants to get sick 3 days before Halloween” and another writes “Carson knows it’s close to Halloween and that is when he likes to get sick.”
