#NextUNSG | Do you believe @Lana_Nusseibeh’s late entry into the selection process for the next #UN Secretary-General is fair and just, given that the other contenders have spent months campaigning?
33%Yes, she is on her right.
54%No. Shouldn't be allowed.
13%The race needed it.
85 votes • Final resultsHow important will receiving the backing of the US be for the next UN secretary-general?
"It’s symbolically, financially and politically vital to have the trust and the backing of the US."
MarĂa Fernanda Espinosa, is a former Ecuador's Minister of National Defense, yet she was nominated by Antigua and Barbuda as #NextUNSG candidate.
In the 6th UN straw poll (the first color-coded round), she received 3 Encourage, 9 Discourage, and 3 No Opinion votes. Facing 3 potential P5 vetoes.
Since entering this process, I have sought to put forward substantive proposals and advance informed debate on how the UN must be led, managed and renewed as it approaches its centenary in an age of radical interdependence. At tomorrow's 7th #UNSG straw poll, the UN Security Council is making an unprecedented move by reverting to non-color-coded ballots after using them on Oct 16.
This shields late-entrant @Lana_Nusseibeh in her first test and allows the P5 to gauge support without showing their hand, but it prolongs the race.
Annalena Baerbock is also a former President of the UN General Assembly (September 9 2025, to September 8 2026).
Activists confronted former German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock at Sweden’s Uppsala University on Monday, accusing her of complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Baerbock was delivering the Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture, jointly hosted by the university and the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation. Protesters challenged her remarks defending attacks on civilian infrastructure and Germany’s military support for Israel.
In October 2024, Baerbock argued that civilian sites could lose their protected status if abused by Hamas. Germany approved €485.1m—about $554m—in arms exports to Israel between October 2023, and May 2025.

For the 34th time, the UN General Assembly called for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo on #Cuba – but with the weakest backing for the resolution in two decades.
In September 2024, the now UN Secretary-General candidate La #Nusseibeh said in a letter to the editor of @TheEconomist that, “[T]he UAE is not providing weapons or any other support to the Rapid Support Forces or any of the warring parties in Sudan.”
The letter followed the publication of the first #UN Panel of Experts on #Sudan’s report, which included conclusions of “credible allegations” that the #UAE was providing military support to the RSF through Chad. hrw.org/news/2026/10/28/uae-…

One of the reasons Nusseibeh waited so long to announce her #NextUNSG candidacy, according to one diplomat who spoke to @EnvoyUNEMAG, is her Palestinian ancestry. Nusseibeh’s father, Zaki Nusseibeh, comes from a prominent #Palestinian family with roots in Jerusalem. One diplomat expressed concerns that the current administration in Washington may not go along with such candidate. envoymag.com/analysis/lana-n…
The international community needs to recover the capacity not merely to contain wars, but to end them. The #UN in general, and the next Secretary-General in particular, can help. And she or he can start with #Sudan. regroupplaybook.org/cp/22241…
