Delcy Rodriguez: The Blaise Compaoré of Venezuela🇻🇪 Since making a deal with the Trump Administration to assume the role of Washington’s Venezuelan viceroy, following the kidnapping of her own President, Nicolas Maduro… The figure she most resembles is the betrayer of Burkina Faso🇧🇫 Blaise Compaoré. On the 15th of October 1987, Burkinabe President Thomas Sankara and 12 others were assassinated in the French-backed coup that brought Compaoré to power. Compaore had been a long-time friend of Sankara, with Sankara regarding Compaore as a brother before their relationship deteriorated. In 2022, a Burkinabè military court convicted Compaoré of complicity in Sankara’s assassination and sentenced him to life imprisonment. (Channels Television⁠) Sankara had sought to break Burkina Faso from dependency on imperialist finance: building agricultural self-sufficiency, expanding healthcare and education, mobilising mass organisations, promoting women’s emancipation, fighting corruption and pursuing an economy based on national sovereignty and popular participation. Compaoré reversed that direction almost immediately. His government abandoned Sankara’s rejection of structural adjustment and moved towards the IMF and World Bank. In 1991, Burkina Faso entered its first IMF structural adjustment programme. Agriculture was liberalised, agribusiness was promoted, state enterprises were privatised and the economy was opened increasingly to foreign capital. The language of popular revolution gave way to the language of “development”, “liberalisation” and attracting foreign investment. The revolutionary committees were dismantled, while Compaoré’s regime increasingly aligned itself with Washington-controlled international financial institutions. Sankara had attempted to break the chains of neocolonial dependency. Compaoré put them back on. Delcy Rodriguez has done the same in Venezuela, shamelessly signing off Venezuela’s vast oil reserves to be controlled by the United States, opening up the oil industry to privatisation, improving relations with Israel on Washington’s orders, and neutering the Bolivarian Revolution. Both Rodriguez and Compaoré betrayed their revolutions, their comrades, and their people for a modicum of power. The power? Being nothing but a viceroy for foreign interests.
