During the 2012–2013 Cypriot financial crisis, the main banks imposed significant losses on (primarily uninsured) depositors as a condition of an international bailout. This took the form of a “bail-in” widely described at the time as a deposit levy, haircut, or confiscation.

It’s deeply worrying that this persistent focus on slave reparations might make the Commonwealth and CHOGM a massive turn off for nations who want to look forward and benefit from all that the Commonwealth can offer in terms of convening and promoting trade and cooperation.

Whatever you think of Restore’s wider policies, this analysis is spot on. This cannot be ignored and warrants further examination now we know more about the longer term impacts.

One of few people brave enough to try and bring an end to the doom loop which has led to the highest rates this century under Labour. It may be fashionable to keep slating her but she was the victim of a Bank of England hatchet job

Farage should call this out. It’s a racial slur without doubt and clearly highly pejorative. He should immediately distance himself from these kinds of remarks.

Someone called it so appositely a schmalzfest. Hard to believe how people have been lured in by such a facile and abjectly vacuous speech. The country is going to hell in a handcart with no-one in the driving seat

The patronising tone of Oli Dugmore is toe curling, politely and calmly deprecating every one else’s point of view whilst ignoring the issues and conflating genuine concerns with racism

What a deeply confused point of view. There is no legal English nationality per se. It’s an ethnicity like French, Japanese or Indian. To be English you must have some English lineage. My kids have both as my wife is from Asia and I am from England

Rates are probably in the ball park of what is required to compete for capital globally. The pound is remarkably resilient - at its 12 month high against the Euro. What is needed is root and brand reform of the NHS, the civil service and the military and the end overseas follies.

At a time when we should be harnessing the power of the Commonwealth to convene and engage, we run the risk that CHOGM will be dominated by the reparations demands of a some Caribbean politicians telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09…
