When someone who’s had a tough year says they’ve nothing to celebrate this holiday season, it’s not an invitation to lecture them on being grateful. It’s an opportunity to listen, hold space, respect where they are, and be compassionate.
They’re not ungrateful. They’re hurting.
As someone who often helps people navigate the harmful impacts of other people’s actions I invite us to think more about the potential impact of our actions and words, as make choices.
Too many people claim good intentions while causing harm. Intent and impact are not the same.
How do we honour their grief and lead with compassion?
Being mindful of our words
Resisting speculation, or assigning blame
Refusing to circulate sensitive or graphic footage
Allowing the family to grieve without making their loss a public debate.

Sometimes, compassion is simply allowing a family to grieve without asking them to make sense of their tragedy for the rest of us.

Not every tragedy has to be a teachable moment immediately.Let’s hold off on the opinion pieces & analysis. A family has lost a child. Let’s honor their unimaginable grief. There’ll be time for the difficult conversations. Right now, let us lead with compassion.

Asking young girls, boys & children to speak up is not enough & especially in a society where the adults, institutions, & systems responsible for protecting them fail to do so, it is dangerous.
2. Our priority must be building systems that protect children, holding institutions accountable, and ensuring that adults who fail them face consequences. We must push for this with the same intensity with which we tell children to use their voices. Maybe even more.
The tension between knowing you cannot afford to disengage from an important issue & desperately needing to protect your mental health.
To the media houses: stop reaching out to us as psychologists to come & discuss the traumatic impact of sexual abuse when you also platform people who spew vile, toxic, criminal nonsense unchecked
It’s giving performative concern for children. Do better
A lot of people are not going to like this
As a therapist who knows how much adults struggle with emotional regulation it’s WILD that we beat children predominantly for struggling to regulate their emotions.
Adults should be beaten everyday if emotional dysregulation is a valid reason for beating a child. Adults throw tantrums, get irritable, snap, speak & behave rudely when they are dysregulated Yet we beat children for the same thing.
Adults should be flogged everyday if emotional dysregulation is a valid reason for flogging a child. Adults throw tantrums, get irritable, snap, rudely when they are dysregulated
Yet we are beating children for the same thing.
Ghana: We are pro-child, a country that upholds family values.
Also Ghana: A headmaster has allegedly been sexually assaulting students in his care. Oh ok. Transfer him to another school. He will not do it again.
Alleged pedophile cured by change of location. Voilà! 🙃
