Enjoyed writing on my favorite bacterium @TrendsMicrobiol

Why are Lyme borreliae so diverse? We highlight how adaptation to different reservoir hosts can shape surface proteins involved in adhesion, immune evasion and persistence, linking Borrelia protein diversity to host ecology and transmission.

The invasive Asian longhorned tick has been found in Maine for the first time. This species is a threat to pets, livestock, and wildlife, as a single female can reproduce without a mate. Mainers are urged to be vigilant and report any unusual ticks.

When I first started studying flaviviruses, I thought I knew the rules:
mature = infectious
immature = non-infectious.
But today, in our @NatureComms paper, we show that immature tick-borne flaviviruses break this rule — they can still infect. 🙂
