10:30 AM – Friday, October 30, 2026 The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has reportedly opened a criminal investigation in California and issued subpoenas to local election workers in Los Angeles, claiming that tens of thousands of noncitizens appear on the state’s voter rolls. At least two employees of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office received grand jury subpoenas last week for a hearing scheduled on November 4th, The New York Times reported on Thursday. The subpoenas seek copies of all internal communications about the DOJ’s demand that county officials and the California secretary of state provide records about their “methods for screening for unlawful voting by aliens” and “efforts to prevent noncitizen votes from being counted in any election.” Earlier this month, the DOJ sent the Golden State a list of registered voters it suspected to be noncitizens. At the time, it warned that failing to respond may result in legal action. Los Angeles County officials received a thumb drive containing the names of 20,000 suspicious individuals on its voter rolls. The federal government asked that the county set aside and “segregate” any ballots received from those on the list so that their citizenship and eligibility to vote can be assessed. L.A. County Assistant Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk Monica Flores declared last week that “the Registrar has no authority under state or federal law to withhold or set aside the ballot of a registered voter on the basis of a third party’s assertion that the voter may not be a citizen” and has “no lawful means of obtaining” information to determine citizenship beyond the voters’ own attestations. She further asserted that if it were to take the time to try to separate ballots to verify citizenship before counting, “it would be virtually impossible to timely certify the election results in compliance with state law.” The new subpoenas also follow a federal judge’s ruling on Wednesday rejecting the federal government’s request to segregate the ballots. L.A. County Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk Dean Logan praised the decision on Thursday. “At every step, the U.S. Department of Justice has taken a confrontational, adversarial approach.
