Hello! We’re scientists from @NASAGoddard, Brown University, Arizona State University, and StarSpec Technologies, and we work on EXCITE (EXoplanet Climate Infrared TElescope), a scientific balloon mission. Read more about EXCITE: go.nasa.gov/3NvesOO

2028 gonna be *rough* without Lebron, Curry, and likely KD.

I'm of two minds: (1) I generally agree wholeheartedly that the time/money pressures of early career academia prevent people from being ambitious in their career or from having a meaningful family life.
This is a great plan if the NIH wants to discourage people who are changing fields, taking on ambitious projects, or have any chance of family life disrupting their postdoc

(2) I generally think there is a pipeline/funding problem (i.e. not enough long term jobs) and it can be unethical to encourage people to remain a grad student/postdoc for extended periods of time when there is little hope of landing a permanent academic job.

And, just as a final thought, I have been at numerous talks at conferences like #ASHG and #ESHG where researchers praised UKB for just how easily accessible the data was and how this has produced so many advancements. And now it feels like this is a new (and EXPENSIVE) barrier.

The UK Biobank (UKB) has been an amazing field changing resource for the past decade. Unfortunately, and very suddenly, they have decided that to work with their data you now *must* use their “Research Analysis Platform” (RAP). @uk_biobank I guess there have been general warning

I'll also note that my experience with these cloud computing platforms is that they are much, much, much more inefficient than our own institutions' high-performance computing cluster.

The RAP doesn't always have job management (e.g. job schedulers), has much more strict time limits. The compute nodes are different. It's much harder to install and manage custom software. All this leads to tremendous slowdowns in productivity.

Replying to @bttyeo @uk_biobank
Wow. I didn't read the email properly until now. Use cloud compute?? That's insane. The work we do leverages huge amounts of GPU compute from resources already bought and paid for. For sure just going to switch to ABCD

I guess only companies will be able to afford to apply machine learning and AI to the @uk_biobank freezing out academic labs. Maybe that’s not the intent of this policy but that will be the consequence.
Wow, with the new @uk_biobank rules, the dataset has just become way too expensive for the kind of computationally intensive work my lab does...
