This morning, we gathered at the New York City Police Memorial to add the names of 42 officers who lost their lives in service to this city.
Among those we honored today were Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, former Chief of Department Joseph Esposito, and those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.
Each name represents a life that meant far more than we could ever capture in an inscription. By placing them here, we make a promise that they will mean something to generations of New Yorkers too.
May the memories of these 42 fallen members be a blessing.

With some additional work, I expect to file a couple more civil-rights lawsuits against the NYPD later tonight or early tomorrow morning.
One involves allegations that a former NYPD commanding officer sent a pornographic video to a female subordinate.
After more than 22 years practicing law since retiring from the NYPD, I've noticed a disturbing pattern in the sexual-harassment cases that come across my desk.
Dominican women account for what appears to be the overwhelming majority, with Puerto Rican women a close second.
And I believe the persistent sexualization of Latina women through the “caliente” stereotype has a great deal to do with it.
The stereotype that Latina women are inherently passionate, sexually provocative, flirtatious, or sexually available is not a compliment. It is a racialized and sexualized perception that encourages some men to mistake a woman's ethnicity for sexual availability.
Some NYPD supervisors apparently believe they can disregard professional boundaries because the woman standing before them is Dominican or Puerto Rican.
My observations are anecdotal, not Department-wide statistical findings. But the recurring allegations warrant serious examination.
And let's be clear about something else.
When the NYPD gets serious about sexual harassment and starts firing people who engage in this conduct, rather than protecting careers and reputations, this shit will stop.
Policies, training seminars, and administrative investigations mean very little when misconduct carries no meaningful consequences.
Accountability requires consequences, including termination when the substantiated misconduct warrants it. Supervisory rank should increase responsibility, not provide protection.
As for the identity of the former commanding officer, good luck trying to figure out who it is.
You'll learn soon enough when I file the Summons with Verified Complaint.
Dominican and Puerto Rican women are police professionals, not sexual stereotypes. They deserve to work without being sexually harassed, objectified, or treated as though their ethnicity makes them available for someone's sexual gratification.
More lawsuits are coming.
