Yesterday was a major win for all those, including @amnesty, who campaigned against death penalty.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he will commute all 548 death sentences to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This will be the largest mass commutation in U.S. History.
California had not executed anyone in more than 20 years, but it maintained the nation’s largest death row population.
The death penalty is a violation of the right to life and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception – regardless of who is accused, the nature of the crime or if they are guilty or innocent. All execution methods are inhumane and unacceptable. @Amnesty advocate for a complete abolition of the death penalty.
Last month, the US government had announced its plan to execute Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squads and broadcast it publicly. A few weeks earlier, Tennessee’s attempted, but botched, execution of Christa Pike was an extreme display of cruelty.

Good that our PM didn’t rush to the US to campaign for “my friend Trump.”
One less embarrassment to explain after this historic midterm drubbing….
Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face.
These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy.
While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.

@MnshaP @SreenivasanJain & Detaining them for merely doing their Job covering Protest Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
When questioning the government becomes an act of defiance, journalists are treated as suspects, protesters are branded anti-national, and sections of the media become more interested in protecting those in power than holding them accountable, democracy has a serious problem.
India's press freedom crisis is not merely about journalists being silenced; it is about citizens being denied the right to question, challenge and demand answers.
A democracy cannot survive on manufactured narratives, compliant newsrooms and inconvenient truths being swept under the carpet.
When the press (GodiMedia) stops questioning power, propaganda starts answering on its behalf.
