Who controls money in an economy? Our problem isn’t money itself. It’s money under capitalism (a system where private owners run businesses for profit), where production serves profit rather than human needs. Think about what we collectively have, the labour, the resources, the factories and the technology. Our productive capacity (everything we’re able to produce) is enormous. We could do almost anything we choose, including solving our social and ecological crises. The obstacle is that fixing them isn’t profitable. So that capacity is pointed elsewhere, toward things that boost profits for those who own the means of production (the factories, land and tools used to make things) and who hold capital (money and assets used to make more money). So the real question isn’t whether we can afford to solve these crises. It’s who decides what our productive capacity is used for, and whose interests that decision serves.
