Patrick was one of those icons who we somehow all took for granted would always be with us.
I grew up as a fan, and was later gifted the privilege of becoming a colleague and friend, working with him for many years on โAmerican Dad!โ, โFamily Guyโ, and โTedโ. He was that rare actor who could take any bit of dialogue and elevate it, making a good writer sound great, and a great writer sound masterful. He was also as humble as they come. I remember exchanging emails with him a number of years ago when he was beginning day 1 of a new film. He commented to me that he always walked onto a new set feeling like the biggest novice there. My stunned reaction was the same as anyoneโs would be. I said, โPatrick, if you feel that way, the rest of us are screwed.โ We have lost a legendary actor today, and for many of us, a good friend. He will be deeply missed by the entire planet.

He was born in a small village in West Yorkshire. His father was a WW2 vet with PTSD from Dunkirk- but Stewart never thought that excused the man's violence towards his kids and his wife. They were poor, it didn't stop him
A teacher put Shakespeare in his hands. Dropped out of school at 15 to pursue acting. First kid to get a grant to study at the Old Vic who wasn't from Oxford or Cambridge.
And then he became... anyone he wanted to be. Roman emperors, Russian revolutionaries, a starship captain. The last changed his life.
See, when he got to Star Trek, he had a massive stick up his ass about acting. But there were long shooting days and to make the time go easier, the rest of the cast loved to play pranks and make jokes. Eventually, Stewart HAD it with them.
"This is acting- it's not supposed to fun!" He famously bellowed at them. The rest of the cast broke out laughing. And Stewart says that chilling out over those 7 seasons, embracing the humor the rest of the cast used to get through those long days, changed him as an actor and a person. He learned to loosen up, to take himself less seriously all while still bringing it to every performance.
He died today in the Hollywood Hills, thousands of miles from the humble circumstances of his birth. Acting took him around the world, and into the hearts of millions.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admirationย for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.
Patrick Stewart, who died today at 86, became Professor X and Captain Picard. As a boy, he watched his father beat his mother, and heard the doctors who came to help tell her it was her own fault.
In the video below, a woman thanks him for helping her survive her own abuse, and his answer brings the whole room to its feet.
He grew up in a poor mill town in England. His father came home from World War II a different man and turned his violence on Patrick's mother.
Every time the doctors and ambulance men came, they told her she must have provoked him, that it takes two to make an argument.
Decades later, Stewart learned from his father's war records that he had been suffering from severe shell shock that was never treated.
So he spent the rest of his life working for two charities: one for abused women, in his mother's name, and one for traumatized soldiers, in his father's.
He could have spent his life hating his father. Instead, he spent it helping others. Is that the kind of legacy that matters more than fame?

Why do you guys insist on continuing to fucking gaslight us about this? Why should anyone listen to your analysis, if it begins with a blatant lie?
I swear to God they didn't used to be this shameless. Good lord.
So here are the most common responses to my argument that Jewish voters have a moral obligation to vote for Abdul, despite misgivings, to check MAGA and the danger it poses on a variety of fronts, including rising anti-semitism on the right:
- Don't have to listen to you because you "backed" Platner, which is not actually true, despite being repeated on social media, but also just a way of avoiding the argument.
- I'm a self-hating Jew. Yes! But not the Jewish part. Also beside the point.
- You wouldn't argue "voters in Dearborn" have an "moral obligation" to vote for a pro-Israel candidate. Would and have!
- You're ignoring anti-semitism on the left. But I've been pretty open and direct about this, including how some interpret or explain or downplay anti-Semitism on our side in ways that we wouldn't and shouldn't extend to the right.
- Insults a plenty. Oh no my feelings.
- How dare you, I don't have to do ANYTHING, you fuck. OK!
But I'll also try here to characterize the rare but sincere response, something like: Abdul's comments after Temple Israel including "hurt people hurt people" are unforgivable, even if he has apologized. The apology is not enough or not sincere, and his outreach efforts to the Jewish community are insufficient. And what I'd say is Abdul has a responsibility in his words and actions to address this criticism over time, even as for many his opposition to military aid to Israel and his description of Israel's conduct in Gaza as a genocide mean he can never persuade many of these critics.
And I would like him to do this continued outreach as a Senator in a Democratic majority. I say this as as a supporter of Abdul, someone I know and respect, and as someone who has been very critical of him when warranted, which I'd continue to do if he's in the Senate.
That is because of the stakes for the country in this election, which include appointments to the Supreme Court, Trump's ability to appoint stooges to his cabinet, and given the virulent bigotry on display in Michigan by Trump and Rogers, the need to check MAGA because of the danger it poses to Muslims and to Jews, and anyone who is not in their view the right kind of American. A Republican Senator said YESTERDAY that Abdul shouldn't be in the Senate because he doesn't recognize Jesus as our savior. Anyone else fail that test?
Now that I've gotten this off my chest, you may resume calling me a moron.

One of the many problems with this administration is that it lies with such regularity and frequency that you can't trust a syllable that comes from anyone. This statement on background might be true, or it might not be true. But the administration has decisively forfeited any presumption of honesty.
NEW: On background from a War Department official:
Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, who was part of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was fired by Secretary Hegseth for severe misconduct. Although Sylviaโs title was director of the Directorate for Strategy, Plans, and Policy at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, known inside the military as the J5, he was NOT a central planner for the Iran War. That is the responsibility of CENTCOM and its commander Admiral Cooper.
Sylvia is the subject of an investigation for leaking classified information about the Iran War, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and more. Due to the Pentagonโs media policy requiring journalists to have escorts in the building, Sylvia began meeting with journalists outside of the Pentagon in order to leak classified information.
Sylvia failed three polygraphs which questioned him about leaking classified information. The investigation into him remains ongoing and has been referred to the Department of Justice for further action. The extent of his leaking became so critical that Secretary Hegseth took immediate action and fired Sylvia in order to protect national security. Urgent action was needed and could not wait another second.

I donโt know, guys. If you donโt look at Arab politics and see fundamentally different rhetoric and strategies from 20 years ago, then you arenโt actually looking at Arab politics. Youโre just reading Likud talking points about it.
Thereโs a massive anti-Israel and anti-Zionist sentiment in the Arab street. Probably 60% of Arab political representation openly represents that sentiment. And also, thereโs a powerful and growing demand to join coalitions, including with the right, to work with state institutions, to integrate into Israeli mainstream society, and so on.
Arab political parties that leave aside their ideological uniqueness and unite in a demand for a seat at the table always improve turnout in the Arab street. Always. For eight elections in a row now, that rule has held. Raam has grown dramatically, specifically because it brought a Zionist Jew into its list as its crime czar and promised its voters to tackle real world problems by working *with* Israeli state institutions, instead of against them.
It is entirely possible for the Arabs of Israel to both feel deeply Palestinian, deeply wary of Israelโs Jewishness, and deeply desiring of greater integration with their Jewish neighbors.
Donโt let anyone make excuses for the many anti-Israel radicals in those lists. But also, itโs simply a lie to pretend that the new and growing desire to integrate isnโt happening.
Welcome to real life, where two seemingly opposite things can be taking place at once.
Replying to @havivrettiggur
Arab voters want integration, which is why it's never reflected in anything they actually do and all the parties they actually vote for favor the Palestinian identity. The average Arab citizen regards himself as a Palestinian, however inconvenient that is for liberal Zionists.
