How big a threat is Russian propaganda to the UK? For my first story outside Ukraine since going freelance, I travelled to Lithuania to see how a country on Russia’s border fights information warfare - and what Britain can learn from it. For @thetimes thetimes.com/world/europe/ar…

I spent a week embedded with Kyiv’s 24th fire and rescue unit this month, as Russia intensified its missile and jet-powered drone attacks on the capital. The recent restrictions on Starlink, they told me, will make their lives even more dangerous. Read below
Over one week, The Sunday Times was embedded with Kyiv’s 24th state fire and rescue unit as it responded to the airstrikes that have become a daily feature of life in Kyiv — witnessing infernos, rescues and the quiet moments in between. The firefighters who are first on the scene of Russia’s attacks said the service was being overwhelmed by their mounting intensity and a lack of new recruits 🔗 Tap the link to read more : thetimes.com/world/russia-uk…

Ukraine has recorded 241,000 suspected Russian war crimes. But how do you find the commanders behind them? I investigated how Ukrainian prosecutors and British-backed international lawyers are trying to do exactly that. My latest for The Sunday Times: thetimes.com/world/russia-uk…

Zelenskyy confirms that major changes to the air raid alert system and curfew rules will be put into place, including a new split between 'yellow' (for drone attacks) and 'red' (missile threat) alerts: nitter.cf/ZelenskyyUa/status/209…
Prime Minister of Ukraine Sergii Koretskyi reported on the preparation of response measures to Russia’s changing tactics in its attacks on Ukraine – specifically, its use of drones to wear down civilian life in our cities and disrupt normal economic activity across our country. First, the systems for alerting the public about existing threats will be revised. People need to understand very clearly what exactly they are supposed to react to and how. Two levels will be introduced to indicate specific threats – yellow and red. The General Staff and the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with the Government, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, will determine each week which threat indicators will trigger a yellow or red alert level. As a general rule, a yellow level will indicate a drone raid, while a red level will indicate a missile threat, including the threat of ballistic or large-scale attacks. The sounds used to signal air raid alerts will also be changed according to whether the threat level is yellow or red. The air raid siren to signal “all-clear” has already been discontinued – the siren is now sounded only when an air raid alert is announced. Work is underway to introduce clearer sound signals for air raid alerts, differentiated according to the level of threat. The main goal of these changes is to give people and businesses in Ukraine more predictability and a better understanding of how to react in each specific situation. I have also instructed officials to develop clearer geographic differentiation of air raid alerts – so that alerts are issued, and reactions are required, specifically in the areas where there is objectively a threat. Second, the Government of Ukraine and local authorities, together with the military, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, must establish clear criteria that will allow government institutions, local authorities, businesses, and other designated economic and social facilities to continue operating during a yellow-level threat. The Government of Ukraine, together with local authorities, will update the standards for the placement of shelters in cities and communities, as well as at infrastructure facilities, including mobile shelters for the protection of people. I have instructed the Prime Minister to prepare additional support measures for businesses that will allow the rapid expansion of modular shelter deployment and ensure that premises can be equipped in line with the updated safety requirements. Third, the operating procedures for public transport in Kyiv during air raid alerts will be reviewed. In particular, during a yellow-level threat, the Syretsko–Pecherska metro line will operate in full. Kyiv has been instructed to significantly increase the number of surface public transport vehicles to compensate for suspensions during air raid alerts on the Sviatoshynsko–Brovarska metro line and to provide a surface transport alternative along the corresponding metro route between the Lisova and Dnipro stations. Curfew hours in Kyiv will also be reduced. Authorities in other cities will be invited to review their curfew hours, taking into account people’s actual security needs and the need for businesses to keep operating. Fourth, we have determined that the rules governing the education sector, including schools and kindergartens, will remain unchanged. It is important that the education process is organized in the interests of children and parents. The Cabinet of Ministers will provide additional financial support measures for medical institutions to maintain an adequate level of operation across Ukraine’s state and municipal healthcare sectors. Fifth, a weekly process is being introduced to audit the existing threat-response procedures, review the relevant measures, and hold consultations between the Government of Ukraine, local authorities, and businesses. The necessary military and security agencies, as well as state-owned companies, will be involved in this work. At every level across our country, protective measures to save lives must be updated on time in line with the specific realities in our cities and communities and the need to ensure that the economy continues to function and that social activity is maintained in our cities and communities. Thank you to everyone who is helping! Glory to Ukraine!

My interview for @CBC , national Canadian radio, about human safari and life in Kherson. It was hard to make it happen as we had no power or Internet anywhere in the city. I had to pre-record it in a crowded communal space which had a generator. 1/3 cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-1…

.@FT Editorial Board: European partners such as Spain and Greece should donate Pac 3 interceptors to Ukraine. The US should confirm and go ahead with granting license to Ukraine for Patriot interceptor production. France and Italy should accelerate SAMP/T NG deliveries and expand interceptor production. Ukraine and its allies should tap defence start-ups to make mass-produced, lower-cost interceptors. Ukraine's allies should do more to help target and destroy Russian missile production and launch sites. ft.com/content/63718844-91f6…

A positive U-turn on the U-turn from the US but worth remember that this is a mid/long-term solution to a short-term problem Ukraine is facing an unprecedented level of Russian ballistic attacks and needs interceptors today, not just in 3+ years
The US is pressing ahead with talks on allowing Ukraine to make Patriot interceptor missiles, which Kyiv urgently wants to defend against Russian attacks, even after President Trump cast doubt on such a deal, four sources familiar with the discussions said reut.rs/4buJDWQ

Our July assessment. This is likely going to be Russia's worst summer of the war yet. Practically nothing has been achieved in terms of territorial gains. Losses remain high both on the front & in the rear, and there is still no clear answer to the Ukrainian long-range strikes.
According to our data, in July the net gains of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine were approximately 106km². This is the fastest Russian advance since January, but their gains remain extremely limited. In July of 2025 the Russians captured nearly 5 times as much territory. 1/

Overnight, Russia attacked Kyiv and the surrounding region with more than two dozen ballistic missiles, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than four dozens. Russian strikes take no summer vacation; support for Ukraine and pressure on the aggressor must not pause either. Every interceptor counts. They are life-saving tools, and I urge all partners to expedite all relevant decisions. Russia’s ability to produce these tools of ballistic terror must be disrupted. Additional, tough sanctions are critical and urgent. I also warn against drawing any false moral equivalence between the aggressor and the state defending itself. Russian attacks cannot be justified under any circumstances, including any Ukrainian actions. On the contrary, Ukraine has every right to strike legitimate military targets inside Russia in self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.

Situation in Ukraine could get worse: "North Korea's KN-23 and KN-24 missiles have a greater range and larger payload than Russia's equivalent, Iskander, but are much less accurate and have been linked to strikes with high civilian death tolls, Ukrainian military sources say."

Another update on the Kherson/FPV attacks: Ukraine's prosecutor general has just shared information about how many civilians have been killed by FPVs: Nearly 1,000 people Remember these drones are fixed with cameras, so the pilots can usually see what they are going to hit
