Well I never.🤣

A Russian bot forgot to switch its account from MAGA to "Ukrainian." 😀
This is how Russians simulate public opinion and pressure politicians into adopting a pro-Russian stance—leading them to believe that this is what their electorate demands. That is why it is important to express your position openly.

1/La Liga, Real Madrid and now Mbappé have all apologized to China for an offhand joke about Mao, a dictator who died 50 years ago. This is how an authoritarian state exports censorship without passing a single law abroad. It simply controls market access.

Thank you @bkogel89! Excellent paper, and I agree the study of mini-publics is mature enough to subject itself to this kind of systematic criticism. Mini-publics have proven themselves; now what? I for one wouldn’t jump to abolishing elections (my own rhetoric to the contrary perhaps) without learning a lot more.

In 1988, Rehavam Zeevi was elected to the Israeli Knesset on a platform to deport 100% of Palestinians from the West Bank & Gaza Strip. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_e…
He was considered far extreme for decades. Today, his views are shared by ~82% of the Jewish Israeli public.
Israeli journalist: "You are both first time voters. What are you voting based on?"
Israeli voter 1: "I don't want there to be Arabs in the county."
Israel voter 2: "Me neither."
Background: 56% of Israeli Jews want to expel all 2M Palestinian citizens of Israel, and 82% of Israeli Jews want to expel all Palestinains in Gaza to other countries. haaretz.com/israel-news/2025…
Turns out, for some voters, it is the only issue they care about: creating an Palestinianrein Israel the same way the Nazis created a Judenrein Germany.

Why did Israel grant Palestinians it conquered in 1948 citizenship (if under belligerent military rule) but not Palestinians conquered in 1967?
In 1948, Israel only had to grant ~150,000 Palestinians citizenship relative to the 600,000 Jews (a number that rapidly increased beginning in May 1948... that had already exceeded a million by 1949).
In 1967, Israel would have had to grant over 1 million Palestinians citizenship relative to the 2.3M Israeli Jews at the time (a number that was no longer rapidly increasing).
There were simply too many Palestinians by 1967 to grant them citizenship.
Ever since, Israel has been kicking the can down the road.... in the process it has imposed an apartheid regime on them and is now genociding them, in both Gaza and the West Bank.
For more than 75% of Israel's history, it has ruled over millions of Palestinians it denies the right the vote.
The equivalent would be, imagine if, since 1838, about about ~1/3rd of the population living under United States rule had been denied the right to vote because they are native Americans rather than white settlers.
Israel is a democracy the same way the US would be a democracy if we stripped the right to vote from 110 million Americans because they had the wrong DNA.

Israeli election day and the same incitement about Arabs voting that comes out every single time.
Netanyahu is now saying that left-wing Jewish Israelis ars escorting Arab women to voting booths... the absolute horror that Jews would protect Arabs... or that Arabs would cast their votes at all... that Arabs are the big threat as per usual.
The anti-Palestinian racism is something nobody every really discusses or attempts to confront.

As record numbers of Israelis vote in today's election, we shouldn't forget that not everyone under Israeli rule gets to vote -- the roughly 3 million Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank, whose lives and futures will be profoundly shaped by the outcome of today's election. And the election result could also have important consequences for the 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, still trapped under Hamas's brutal rule.

Yes, Mao Zedong was a dictator. He held absolute power over China from 1949 until his death in 1976, with no free elections, a one-party system, cult of personality, and suppression of dissent. Policies like the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution caused tens of millions of deaths through famine and violence.
No one should have to apologise for stating that historical fact.

If you are Palestinian Israeli (Sami Abou Shahadeh) & say Oct. 7th was a "significant historical event" you are disqualified from the election b/c you called for violence.
If you are Jewish Israeli (Amichai Eliyahu) & say “anyone waving a Palestinian ... flag shouldn’t continue living on the face of the earth," you are NOT disqualified, b/c you apparently did NOT call for violence.
Not so complicated after all. It's called Apartheid Israel.
This is Sami Abou Shahadeh. He is the leader of the Balad party, a Palestinian political party in Israel.
Sami was disqualified because of this article he published on Oct. 8, 2023. alaraby.co.uk/opinion/%D8%B7…
Israeli Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara backed Abou Shahadeh's disqualification, saying it "expressed support for armed struggle." Go read the article. it does not express support for armed struggle. not even close.
Meanwhile, Amichai Eliyahu was not disqualified even though he said “anyone waving a Palestinian ... flag shouldn’t continue living on the face of the earth.”
(aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/isr…). He's #4 on his party's list. ynetnews.com/article/86upvbr…
To repeat:
If you say, like the Palestinian Sami Abou Shahadeh said, that Oct. 7th was a "significant historical event in military, political, and strategic terms," than you are disqualified because you are calling for violence.
If you say, like the Jewish Amichai Eliyahu said, that “anyone waving a Palestinian ... flag shouldn’t continue living on the face of the earth," than you are not disqualified, because you are apparently not calling for violence.
Different rules for different people. Not so complicated afterall, it's called apartheid.
