Happy Labour Day / Labor Day to Comrades, Friends, Union Siblings, Colleagues, Acquaintances, and All Workers Everywhere! ✊ This year, Suzanne MacNeil (@esooze) & I are spending Labor Day / Labour Day in Chicago, a city with a remarkable and incredibly rich history of workers’ struggles, from the Haymarket Affair in 1886 which was spurred by the fight for the eight-hour day, to the Pullman railroad strike in 1894 over corporate greed and poverty, to the Memorial Day Massacre during the “Little Steel” strikes in 1937, and much more… Chicago has always been at the center of the U.S. trade union and workers’ rights movement and more “Local 1’s” than anywhere else. We are privileged and delighted to be spending Labour Day / Labor Day amidst and amongst more than 3,000 folks at the annual Socialism Conference (@SocialismConf) here in Chicago — trade unionists & workers’ rights activists, defenders of immigrants, migrants & refugees, folks in the front lines of the struggle for Trans liberation, social movement organizers and activists of all sorts, socialist academics, authors & journalists who write about our movements and our collective histories, and so many others. As always, it has been inspiring and rejuvenating, and we are so happy to be back in Chicago for the annual Socialism Conference again this year. Workers have absolutely nothing in common with their bosses, and absolutely everything in common with every other worker everywhere in the world, regardless of nationality. Today on Labor Day / Labour Day, let us both celebrate the victories of the past as well as recommit to the struggles ahead, and redouble our efforts and our fight for social, economic and environmental justice. As we do on Labour Day / Labour Day each year, let’s join in re-committing ourselves to the ongoing struggles for our movement(s), and prepare fo the as-yet-unforseen struggles ahead.
