CONFIRMED TORNADO IN DAVIS COUNTY β AND THE RADAR SIGNATURE WAS INCREDIBLE
The National Weather Service confirmed video showing rotation reaching the ground with debris being lofted into the air. The tornado touched down near a summit along the ridgeline extending west from Francis Peak, around 7,500 feet elevation.
The timing of the tornado is estimated around 1:45 PM MDT based on radar and the video report.
And the radar data from this storm is pretty incredible.
At the lowest radar scan, there was an 81 mph inbound wind and a 102 mph outbound wind right next to each other. That's a 183 mph difference across the circulation, which works out to an estimated 92 mph (80-knot) rotational velocity.
In other words, this wasn't just broad rotation. The circulation became extremely tight and powerful.
The storm also developed a classic supercell structure as it moved across Davis County, including a pronounced hook echo. A funnel was spotted near Farmington before the circulation tightened even further as it moved into the foothills and mountains.
Thankfully, the tornado appears to have remained away from populated areas. VERY LUCKY!
The storm also produced very large hail, with reports around golf-ball size in parts of northern Utah.
Utah typically sees only a few tornadoes each year, and most are weak. A confirmed tornado at roughly 7,500 feet in the Wasatch Mountains is an exceptionally rare event.

This was in West Layton. The second video is right after it passed. My phone didnβt pick up the sound very well but the rumbling sounded like the jets we are use to! I didnβt realize it was the storm until it was at a distance.

Honestly I wouldnβt be shocked to see some EF2 or EF3 tree damage out of this:
BREAKING: We believe a tornado may have occurred on the rural north side of the Salt Lake City, Utah metro area. This is an extremely rare event.
In fact, the radar signatures we're seeing are commensurate with storms that, historically, have produced EF2 or EF3+ tornadoes. This is truly an upper-echelon event, particularly for this region.
Utah only averages 3 tornadoes per year β most of which are weak. The storm that occurred early Friday afternoon was a legitimate, mean supercell with a full-fledged Oklahoma-style hook echo. It also probably produced some large, damaging hail, perhaps upwards of golf ball size.
Rotation was evident on the KMTX radar, located north of the Great Salt Lake, around 1:30 p.m. as the thunderstorm was beginning to work ashore east of the Lake. Rotation remained broad and diffuse until between 1:38 and 1:44 p.m., when it rapidly consolidated, tightening into a strong mesocyclone (rotating updraft) over Interstate 15 in Farmington.
At this point, a funnel cloud was reported. We believe it probably had at least intermittent ground contact as a tornado.
Then rotation tightened into a very strong circulation, and perhaps a significant tornado, as the storm passed over the mountains and canyon east of Farmington. Hikers on the Great Western Trail (Francis Peak to Morgan County) may notice a swath of trees down in the coming days from what may have legitimately been a strong tornado.
Fortunately, the region appears sparsely-populated, and the probable tornado likely lifted before reaching Interstate 84.
This may have been among the most impressive radar signatures ever seen in the state of Utah β nonetheless on a day when only a "marginal" severe weather risk was forecast.
