the discourse around Lanterns shows why comic book projects don’t usually dare to take on some of the deeper societal issues in their shows because you guys can’t handle nuance and truly see everything as black and white. you are uncomfortable acknowledging racism, and also uncomfortable acknowledging how John’s parents are using racism which is a real issue and weaponizing it against their own son for John Sr’s failure at becoming the Lantern because the ring CHOSE HIM FIRST. you are uncomfortable acknowledging that Hal will never have to have some of the obstacles John has due to race, but not seeing how the show is screaming at you that Bernadette’s worldview is flawed and she isn’t acknowledging Hal’s own fearless built from watching his father blow up as a child which TRAUMATIZED him and gave him a large portion of his fearlessness, something John has never had to experience. you see the abusive cycle John is put through in the show and the way Bernadette justifies it and think the show is trying to tell you this is just because Hal is white. No Episode 3 of Lanterns wants you to UNDERSTAND John, not tell you Hal shouldn’t have the ring because he’s white 🤦‍♀️
