Frontier MoE models need massive scale-up clusters, but copper maxes out around 144 GPUs. Expanding to 512+ GPU pods usually requires 130K+ optical fibers, a challenge for costs, supply chains, and reliability.

Sam Altman just reached the same conclusion Nick Harris did a decade earlier during his @MIT post-doc: light, not electronics, is computing's next leap.
Nick founded Lightmatter in 2017 to build it. By April 2025, Nature published proof: the first photonic AI processor running ResNet, BERT, and Atari like DeepMind.
