Freiwald initially deployed with SEAL Team 5 and SEAL Team 3, executing multiple combat tours during Operation Iraqi Freedom while continually mastering specialized combat skills, including sniper operations, Arabic language fluency, and tactical rock climbing. In March 2005, Freiwald volunteered for the rigorous assessment and selection course for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU). After successfully completing the demanding program, he was assigned to Blue Squadron, placing him at the absolute tip of the spear during the Global War on Terror. Over years of tier-one service, he deployed into high-risk combat environments, executing complex direct-action missions aimed at neutralizing high-value targets across volatile conflict zones. On September 11, 2008—exactly seven years after the terrorist attacks on American soil—Freiwald participated in a night assault targeting a heavily armed Taliban commander in Afghanistan. When intense, point-blank enemy fire broke out, Freiwald was severely wounded* but courageously continued engaging hostile fighters while protecting his teammates and securing the target compound. He succumbed* to his combat injuries the following day, sacrificing his life at thirty years old while defending his fellow operators on the anniversary of 9/11. Corporal Henry Lewis Ashford served as a rifleman with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division during the Vietnam War. He began his tour in Vietnam on December 6, 1968. On February 23, 1969, Ashford was on patrol in Quảng Nam Province. The danger was often impossible to see. Marines moving through the dense vegetation and rugged terrain faced more than enemy forces they could identify. Mines and improvised explosive devices could be hidden along trails and routes, waiting silently beneath the ground. That day, one of those explosives struck. Ashford was k*lled during combat operations. He was only 23 years old. His tour had lasted less than three months. For the Marines who served in Vietnam, danger did not always announce itself with gunfire. Sometimes it was buried beneath their feet, hidden along the very paths they had to travel. Ashford’s story is a reminder of that unseen danger—and of the young Americans who entered places they had never known, carrying the responsibility of serving alongside their fellow Marines.
