Good morning legends 🧘‍♂️☀️ In 1951, inside a Warner Brothers sound stage, an actor came in to record some vocal effects, and screamed, a few times. One of those screams was logged in the studio's sound library under the label "man getting bit by an alligator". That scream later became known as the Wilhelm Scream, and from the 1970s to today, it's been used in over 400 films. Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, and hundreds more. Seventy five years later, there is still no official record proving exactly who screamed. Ben Burtt, the sound designer behind Star Wars, spent years researching it and the closest thing to evidence he found was an old call sheet listing an actor named Sheb Wooley. That's the whole proof. The researcher who traced this has said there's no paperwork that actually confirms it was him. Wooley died in 2003, without it ever being officially confirmed the scream was his, let alone receiving anything from its use in 400 films. When something becomes valuable and repeated enough to turn into an entire industry's inside joke and there was still no permanent record made on day one, even the identity of its creator ends up stuck forever at we're pretty sure. 75 years of "we're pretty sure" is exactly the gap @soneium exists to close.
