Really even and open Victoria Derby this year. Worth noting that 8 of the runners have had 4 or less starts leading into Saturday, including some of the more favoured runners. Here is a list of how many starts each winner had leading into the Derby for the last 25 years. 🧐

For those questioning the quality of the Victora Derby winners some great stats from the @Winning_Post today 10 of the last 20 winners of the Victora Derby have gone on to win another Group One , compared to only 7 for the Australian Derby

We don't know the denominator here of how many horses have tried to win off less than five starts , but their strike rate is zero.

Its time to talk about reducing the distance of the Victoria Derby again. Apparently 2500m is too far for young 3YOs. How come they never talk about reducing the distance of the Oaks ?

First to do the Bletchingly/Cox Plate double. First in 55 years to do the Lawrence/Cox Plate double. Maldivian the only other Cox Plate winner in the last 35 years to even run in the Lawrence. Goes to show how hard it is to stay up so long. What a champ!

Huge effort by Cosmic Crusader to be up and winning a Bletchingly & Lawrence Stakes so early in the spring period, adding a Turnbull, doing a Caulfield Cup run into Cox Plate and winning. That’s a proper old school preparation that you don’t see deliver often these days.

The Sportsbet Marching Band was a unique and vibrant marketing gimmick, but did we really have to switch the coverage of all monitors on course to appease the Corporate Bookmaker OverLords? For 10-15 mins no coverage of any interstate or country races on a feature reace day🤷
