Visited Vio Island today, where the first solar mini-grid in Fiji 🇫🇯 was introduced ten years back. Today, @UNDP_Pacific and govt w 🇦🇺 🇳🇿 🇬🇧 is upgrading this to a larger capacity smart grid to power all household energy needs on Vio.
Based on community feedback, the integrated effort now includes an evacuation centre that doubles as a community space; WASH and water supply; potential for E-Boats; insurance instruments, smart meters, and more!
Designs are in place for this pioneering all-of-island, all-of-household model to be replicated across 330 communities across Fiji. This is a blueprint ready to scale, also elsewhere⚡

In the #Pacific, one learns to expect the unexpected! En route to Vanuatu 🇻🇺 w a 24-hour delay due to volcanic activity, but arrived today on my first visit to see a @undp team delivering in the world's most disaster-exposed country.
Stopped at the open market in Port Vila on way in from airport and chatted with women vendors.
#Vanuatu’s tagline is ‘the best places will talk with you’, and I look forward to experiencing just that.

Excellent discussion with Vanuatu 🇻🇺 PM Jotham Napat today. From championing the landmark #ICJ Advisory Opinion to navigating a major earthquake and snap elections, simultaneously, Vanuatu continues to demonstrate remarkable leadership.
We also exchanged views on the climate-health nexus and the importance of strong institutions in managing increasingly complex risks while delivering progress for all. Deeply privileged to nurture @UNDP @UN partnership with this deeply resilient nation.

A visit to Mele Village and the Vanuatu Coastal Adaptation Project, supported by @UNDP @theGEF, shows how adaptation ambition translates into action on the frontline of climate change. Amazing to see the end-to-end effort underway!
