Spent this week working half-days from a rented surf van as an experiment in finding more flow and breaking up the WFH routine. 🏄♂️💻
The verdict? I won't be buying a surf van anytime soon, but it would be a refreshing way to work half a day per week.
Cons:
- Surf van ergonomics aren't built for productive work — no standing desk and seating can't compete with a proper office chair
- The view that inspired creativity sometimes became a distraction (watching waves / beach-goers)
- 18-minute commute felt longer than ideal

We are starting the year off strong. On episode #31 of the Optimize podcast, I chatted with @tymagnin, CEO of @AnimalzCo, about the opportunities for content marketers and agencies in 2024 after what was a very challenging 2023.
Ty is an absolute animal when it comes to #contentmarketing. Ty is also the CEO of Animalz, a content marketing agency for enterprise companies, startups, and VC firms. He previously led marketing teams at Emotive, UiPath, and Appcues.
Listen to this week’s episode to hear more about:
- Content Adaptation — A core theme of the episode, Ty speaks to the need for content and SEO teams to create the ‘right’ fantastic content. From his perspective, teams that generate great content AND adapt it appropriately for multiple distribution channels will win in 2024.
- AI’s Dilemma — Ty and I discussed his experience using SEO-optimized AI-generated content and how Ty’s experiments have left him questioning its long-term efficacy in building positive relationships with your target audience and driving conversions.
- SGE + User Search Behavior — Ty shares his thoughts on the potential impact of SGE on user search behavior, where he envisions a continual trend toward fewer clicks and predicts the disruption of certain keywords.
- 2024 Predictions — Ty outlines Animalz’s bets on the continual diversification of content strategies and the increased focus on measuring content ROI internally and for their clients.
Next week, we chat with @seosmarty! Ann is such a great #SEO, and the Co-Founder of @smartyMktg, a boutique marketing agency that provides personalized SEO consulting, PR, and content audit services. Her 20+ years of experience include working as editor-in-chief at Search Engine Journal and being a regular columnist at Moz, Mashable, Social Media Examiner, and more. That episode will drop on 1/10.
It’s not too late to start your New Year’s resolutions! Set your team up for success in 2024 with @GoPositional's fantastic toolset for content marketing and SEO teams! DM me if you'd like to check it out.

Best advice we got when starting @heyequals. Des made me promise that if he invested I'd write a blog post every week.
It got me in the habit of sharing our opinions and ideas with the world. Over and over. Don't know where we'd be if I hadn't practiced that from the beginning.
Hey, listen up.
Don't forget to tell people what your business is all about.
And then, repeat yourself, like, hundreds of times.
💬 Well said by @destraynor:
"Too many businesses forget to tell people what they're all about.
What I mean by that is a lot of companies launch and they have this weird kind of vibe, like 'why isn't anyone paying attention to me?'.
To me, a launch isn't just like 'oh, we've put up an alpha page' or something.
Launch is when you're laying it all out there:
Here's what we think.
Here's our vision for the future.
Here's our product.
Here's how our product matches our vision.
Here's where our product's going.
Here's why you should use our product.
You probably need to tell people that, like, hundreds of times."
Gen-AI cannot replace good content marketing in its current state.
Content experts I’ve talked to are coalescing around this now (and saying “yeah duh!” to me right now)...
We’re on the downslope of the hype cycle.
Today’s the day content marketers educate their c-levels on where their gen-AI experiments are falling short.
And where they do create efficiencies and value.
Tell them it’s not a 10x tool in its current state—or even 2x—at creating the content that best builds your brand.
Last month I started as the CEO at Animalz 😊 ...
You might know us, but Animalz is a content marketing agency that delivers growth outcomes for SaaS businesses.
Here’s why I joined 👇
3️⃣ I want to compose my life of moments of leadership and service. For those are the things I’ve found to give me the most meaning. And I believe that this role at Animalz is the best platform for me to exercise both.
