Remember these guys? They’re from the $250M DFW gold scam case. Reading court filings in the case proves the immigration angle is almost as wild as the scam itself. Start with the people around the jewelry operation: Rafiq Sajwani: came from Pakistan in 2018 on an EB-5 investor visa, later became a permanent resident, and was recruited to work at Malani Jewelers. Sunil Keshavan Nair: came from India in 2012 and became a U.S. citizen in 2021. Investigators allege he participated in undocumented gold purchases and used $1 bills as “tokens” in what they described as a hawala network. Tithi Patel: Gujarati reporting says she entered on a student visa and overstayed before working around Tilak Jewelers. Multiple other defendants: booking records show immigration detainers or other foreign-national indicators. Then there’s the IT-company angle. (shocker, I know) The State alleges Shermyn Malani owned an IT company associated with the Georgia jewelry operation. Investigators also described IT companies in the broader case as being used for “visa fraud and money laundering.” But wait, there’s more - a confidential source separately accused the Malanis of hiring illegal immigrants. Now zoom out. Authorities allege elderly Americans were frightened into converting their savings into gold and cash. Couriers then collected it. Jewelry stores allegedly bought the gold below market and melted it, making the victim trail harder to follow. Investigators describe shell companies, crypto, informal money-transfer mechanisms and overseas connections. Then you get to the people running the jewelry businesses. Iqbal and Shermyn Malani happen to be American-Canadian dual citizens, but unlike what you and I think of when we think Canadian, their overseas connection aren’t merely ancestral. Iqbal, Shermyn and other Malani family members have served as directors of an Indian company in Hyderabad. Now - here’s the part I didn’t expect. In court, the Malanis’ family testified that Iqbal held a prestigious spiritual-leadership position in their religious community, Shermyn taught children there and the couple had donated more than $10 million to charity. Malani Jewelers’ own website identifies the Aga Khan Foundation / Aga Khan Development Network as its primary international charitable relationship and says purchases at Malani Jewelers contribute to its charitable giving programs. Tl/dr. We have an alleged fraud in which American seniors’ wealth was converted into gold. Investigators allege that gold entered jewelry businesses. Those businesses sit inside a family network with direct overseas corporate ties. The investigation itself contains allegations involving visa fraud, immigration violations, IT companies and difficult-to-trace international money movement. And the jewelry company publicly says its business supports a transnational religious/philanthropic network. The biggest question I’m left with, among many others is: How many people entered or remained in the U.S. through visa programs, got plugged into this business network and then ended up inside an alleged fraud that moved American seniors’ wealth overseas?
