End of an era. CKWX— News 1130 as I’ll remember it — goes off air. At its peak, Western Canada’s largest radio newsroom. The place I spent bulk of my career before moving into TV. Lifelong friendships made. On our best days we punched well above our weight. A loss for local news.

So pleased to have our Emergency Resolution – Distinct Local Election Period Resolution – Coquitlam and Richmond passed today at UBCM:   Whereas municipalities and regional districts are currently engaged in local elections.   And whereas elections are taxing on local government capacity and resources, at a time when British Columbia is facing considerable economic and social uncertainty.    And whereas in the spirit of a fair, open and transparent democratic system, British Columbia voters deserve the opportunity and respect to have unfettered attention on local issues during local government elections, without being overshadowed by a provincial election.   Therefore be it resolved that UBCM call on the provincial to not trigger early elections during local government election period to preserve the integrity of the local government election process.   And be if further resolved that UBCM call on senior orders of government to enshrine into legislation a framework to prevent the potential for overlapping local government, provincial and federal elections.

UBCM President Cori Ramsay urges Premier Eby to hold off on calling a snap election until after the municipals: “It’s already confusing enough, and voter turnout is low. To add a provincial campaign on top of the local campaign is just going to confuse the electorate.”

Building Canada starts locally. FCM is advocating for the investments needed to keep communities strong in BC and across the country. Past President @rebeccaleebligh is representing FCM at #UBCM26 This week in Vancouver. FCM will continue to bring local issues—like those represented in this room—to the federal government. #CDNMuni #cdnpoli @UBCM

DRIPA represents a significant development in BC’s approach to reconciliation and Indigenous-provincial relations. UBCM's plenary session drew on local leaders, legal experts, provincial representatives and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip. #UBCM26 youtu.be/PcrZNXKXG70

I am late in sharing this, but it still makes sense because the @UBCM annual convention is on right now here in Vancouver. Last Thursday, UBCM President @CorRams was on our show to talk about the convention and the various planned resolutions. She had a lot to say about NDAs.

"We're not going to get rid of the attacks on local elected people,” said Brian Frenkel, “But we are working on materials that will ensure that every official in BC has somebody to come back to and help them through their dark times.” youtube.com/watch?v=MLnjr4Ym… #UBCM26

Online harassment, personal attacks and hostile public debate are adding to the pressures elected officials deal with, yet they often don’t have access to mental health supports through their workplace. UBCM is developing resources to ensure support is in place when it's needed.

Delegates will have an opportunity to consider what DRIPA means for their communities, learn where clearer engagement and information-sharing is needed, and how relationships among First Nations, local governments and the Province can support better policy outcomes.
