Climate-Smart Agriculture: Big leap for Butaleja District as Kaiti Modern farmer group in Naweyo sub-county starts rearing of black soldier flies.
Having completed training with the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP), Kaiti Modern farmer group in Kaiti Parish of Naweyo sub-county started rearing black soldier flies, earlier this week.
Black Soldier Flies (BSF), also known by the scientific name "Hermetia illusens" are non-pest insects that turn organic waste into valuable farm inputs and a rich source of proteins.
The larvae of Black Soldier Flies contain between 35% and 42% protein and about 30% fat, making them a low-cost nutritious alternative for more expensive sources like fishmeal and soybean mill for poultry, pigs and fish.
The larvae also rapidly consume market waste, food leftovers, brewery waste and animal manure, reducing organic waste and lowering methane immissions. This makes the rearing of these flies a climate-smart venture.
Such farmers are supported throuh the Beneficial Insects Value Chain of UCSATP.

Happy to preside over the commemoration of the world food day today at @mbazardi in mbarara.
This world food day has also concided with the marking of 100 years of @mbazardi formerly mbarara stock farm( locally known then as "Famu y'omujungu").
I congratulated our @narouganda research scientists for always sustaining our agri-food systems through their continous research and breeding efforts.
Today, we released three (3) new improved varieties of sweet potatoes called the "The purple fleshed Sweet potatoes" which are rich in many nutrients including zinc, vitamin A, C and with antioxidants that prevent/reduce cancer risks and hypertension.
I appealed to all leaders ( agriculture scientists, political leaders and farmers ) to mobilise our people to continue farming and produce more food for our markets. Out of the 40m acres of arable land that God gave us , we haven't even used half of if for effective agricultural production.
I assured our farmers, that government is aware of the increasingly harsh and unpredictable weather and all resources to scale up irrigated farming are being mobilised.
Science and research through innovation must support farmers with knowledge and technology enablers of sustainable climate smart farming. We have to balance farming for food, for income and for Animal feeds while doing so in an environmentally secure ecosystem.
I wish you all fellow farmers a happy world food day!
