🚨Practice affirming results!🚨
The #radonc docs @UCSDRadMed @UCSDRadRes tried to answer the age-old question of...
❓What is considered a high-risk biochemical recurrence (BCR) after RT to the prostate❓
Is it pre-RT PSA, stage, grade? Is it post-RT PSA doubling time?
Turns out, the European & International consensus guidelines for defining high-risk BCR as
1⃣ Gleason 8 or more
2⃣time to BCR of 18 months or less
⭐️are supported by this report!⭐️
In this study of over 7,000 men who had BCR after prostate RT (and it was quite a demographically diverse population!), those with initial Gleason 8+ or time to BCR 18+ months were
☑️as likely to die from prostate cancer as other causes
☑️at a higher risk of increased all-cause death
Their low-risk BCR counterparts did not see these outcomes.
Given these findings, are we over-treating low-risk BCRs with quality-of-life altering androgen deprivation therapy? 🤔🤔🤔
