A new study published in BMC Endocrine Disorders helps better characterize medically underserved populations with Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes treated with insulin that are seen for care in Federally Qualified Health Centers in the US, a population often underrepresented in diabetes research. Led by PI Dr. Ashby Walker, UF Diabetes Institute Associate Director of Community and Population Health, and Dr. Young-Rock Hong, Assistant Professor of Emory University, the study analyzed electronic health record data on 16,000 adults with T1D and T2D from 40 FQHCs and over 300 clinical care sites across 17 states. More than half of patients lived below the federal poverty level, and half (50.8%) had an HbA1c above 9.0%, with low utilization of technologies like Continuous Glucose Monitors and Insulin Pumps (<5%). The findings emphasize the need for interventions to address long-standing disparities in low-income communities and to expand access to diabetes technology and self-management support in safety-net primary care.
