On 2 November, we publish the @UKAIofficial Women in AI Industry Guide on Fair AI. I chair the Women in AI Working Group at UKAI, a trade association for UK AI businesses. The guide is built around FAIRWAY, a framework created by Claire Roberts and developed through seven working groups - led by Beth Curtis-Clarke, @sumathimenon and Maninder Paul, @WyerSarah, Matt Holmes, Stephen Moore, Claire Roberts and myself - with 48 experts and practitioners who gave their time voluntarily. @BaronessUddin, a member of the Working Group, has written the foreword and supported this initiative throughout. The argument is simple. Responsible AI is a phrase that has not yet earned the trust of the people it is meant to protect. It does not tell a customer or an employee whether your use of AI will make things better or worse for them. It does not answer the thing they are most concerned about: fairness. AI will not create unfair outcomes for people. People will. That is not to say the systems are neutral - they are built on historical data, and they will carry its patterns forward. It is to say the choices are ours. People decide how AI is used. People write the prompts and enter the data. People build the agents. People hand over the decision-making. And people will be accountable when those decisions are unfair. Not AI. Get it wrong, and we hand our values to systems built on historic inequality - with consequences for individuals, for organisations and for public trust. Across seven chapters, the report asks leaders to look beyond short-term efficiency and consider what AI may erode: skills, culture, trust. And how those losses show up commercially, in retention, talent and resilience. No framework can guarantee fair outcomes. This one makes the question visible. It is written for those who select, buy, implement or oversee AI and for regulators, policymakers and parliamentarians with a duty to scrutinise how these systems are governed. One question sits at the centre of it: "Will our use of AI improve fair outcomes for people, or not?"
