Dr. W. Matt Jolly is a Research Ecologist with the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory, where he explores the intricate relationships between vegetation dynamics, weather, and wildfire behaviour.
As the science lead for the US National Fire Danger Rating System and head of the live fuel dynamics research team, his work integrates field and laboratory studies to significantly advance the understanding of live plant flammability.
Dr. Jolly's work focuses not only on foundational science but also on translating this knowledge into action, accelerating and improving wildland fire decision-making through better tools that characterise spatial and temporal fire potential variations. His research offers critical insights into the fundamental drivers of live fuel flammability and demonstrates how new knowledge can be leveraged to improve global wildfire management.

#UKWildfire #NewPerspectivesSharedSolutions
We are pleased to share that the submission deadline for the 2026 UK Wildfire Conference has been extended to Friday 8 May 2026.
This extension reflects our commitment to achieving strong representation from across the UK, while also welcoming valuable contributions from international colleagues.
We are particularly keen to ensure that perspectives from across UK regions, sectors, and organisations are well represented in this year’s programme, given the increase in wildfire risk and occurrence in recent years.
The theme for Wildfire2026, ‘New Perspectives – Shared Solutions’, highlights the urgent need to rethink how we approach wildfire challenges. It recognises that no single viewpoint can fully address the complexity of fire risk. By bringing together diverse UK experiences alongside relevant international insights, we aim to develop solutions that are informed, inclusive, and effective - supporting communities, policymakers, and professionals to respond more resiliently to wildfires.
We welcome proposals for both speaker presentations and posters from practitioners and researchers, which clearly align with the conference theme.
Further details on how to submit can be found on the Wildfire2026 website.
We will aim to notify authors of outcomes by early June 2026.
We look forward to receiving your contributions and to showcasing the breadth of expertise across the wildfire community.
Submit your abstract via the link below and share this update with contacts that you think will be interested.

We are inviting speakers and posters with an interest in wildfire to send a proposal, whether practitioner or researcher, or from inside or outside the UK. Proposals for both speaker presentations and posters that can demonstrate clear links to the conference theme are warmly welcomed.
By sharing knowledge, experiences, and strategies, we aim to create solutions that are informed, inclusive, and effective, helping communities, policymakers, and professionals to respond to wildfires more resiliently.
Deadline for submissions 24 April 2026. We will aim to let authors know about the outcome by early June 2026.

Benefits of presenting at Wildfire2026
As the largest multi-agency wildfire conference in the UK, this biennial meeting will provide an ideal opportunity for stakeholders from all sectors to network and exchange ideas and good practice. The event represents a unique opportunity to share new insights, cutting edge research and collaborative work on new wildfire perspectives and shared solutions. More specifically, delivering a presentation at this event will provide you with the opportunity:
• To discuss best practice with others
• For career development - to show others your expertise and experience
• To gather feedback on your ideas, practices and research projects- this may help you overcome a problem or suggest a new area of work of research
• To network and make new contacts
“What topics can I submit?”
The theme for Wildfire2026 is ‘New Perspectives – Shared Solutions’, reflecting the urgent need to rethink how we approach wildfire challenges and recognising that no single perspective can address the complexity of fire risk.
As such, we particularly encourage submissions from authors in the following areas:
• Emerging or new wildfire threats
• Management of wildfires in complex environments
• New wildfire technologies
• New perspectives from sectors or organisations who haven’t previously attended UK Wildfire Conferences
Details about how to submit can be found on our website via the link below. Deadline for submissions 24 April 2026 and we will aim to let authors know about the outcome by early June 2026.
