The Refugee Convention was built on a powerful belief: that protecting people forced to flee is a responsibility we all share.
For 75 years, that promise has been upheld through solidarity. Together, we can help keep that promise alive.

A privilege to deliver the annual Barbara Harrell-Bond Lecture at the University of Oxford.
Before the international refugee system existed, Oxford offered refuge to academics fleeing persecution.
That legacy and commitment to learning live on in the students and academics I met, and in our exchange on the future of refugee protection.
Grateful for Oxford’s longstanding partnership with UNHCR and its deep commitment to expanding access to education for refugees.

Meeting Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in London today was a powerful reminder of what refugee protection can make possible.
The UK gave his family safety as they fled Nazi persecution. It also gave me asylum when I needed it most. We know first-hand that refuge can be both life-saving and life-changing.
Seventy-five years after helping shape the Refugee Convention, we discussed how the UK can partner with UNHCR to uphold its legacy around the world — strengthening international protection, ending long-term displacement and supporting the countries that generously host refugees.

I was a refugee, and education changed everything for me. It gave me the chance to shape my own future.
Today, 5.8 million refugee children are out of school, while funding cuts threaten hard-won progress.
Displacement should never determine how far a child can go.
Nearly 6 million refugee children were out of school worldwide in 2025. Deepening funding cuts threaten to shut millions more out of classrooms and reverse years of progress in refugee education. More here: unhcr.org/news/press-release…

For refugee children, school is where safety begins. But getting in is just the first step. Every one of them deserves a path that leads somewhere, and education is how they get there.
