ALT A rapidly strengthening storm centered just off the North Carolina coast will produce widespread heavy snow and gusty winds from the southern Appalachians across eastern Georgia, the Carolinas, and southeastern Virginia through Sunday morning. Widespread 4-8” of snow is expected with locally more than 12” possible (30-50% chance). Additional moderate to heavy snow is likely for portions of southeast Massachusetts including Cape Cod on Sunday. Near-blizzard to blizzard conditions are possible through Sunday morning along the coast from the Grand Strand of South Carolina northward through far southeast Virginia where powerful to potentially damaging onshore winds are expected. Sharply reduced visibilities due to the snow and blowing snow will make travel extremely treacherous. Coastal flooding is likely along the East Coast with some impacts including road closures, flooded businesses and homes in low-lying areas, and beach erosion. Arcitc cold will follow behind this system.
