Who’s influencing the voices meant to represent patients? A new study led by USC Price Associate Professor and @USCSchaeffer Senior Scholar Genevieve Kanter (@ProfGenKanter) examines an overlooked source of potential industry influence: patient and consumer representatives on FDA advisory committees who have ties to pharmaceutical-funded advocacy organizations. These committees help inform FDA decisions about new drugs and medical devices, making transparency around those relationships a matter of public health and public trust. Read the full article to see how USC Price research is raising questions about disclosure policies and accountability in federal decision-making. Read Here: schaeffer.usc.edu/research/f…

USC Price alumna Kelly Busta is taking on a leading role in USC’s Office of Threat Assessment and Management, where she helps identify concerning behavior, assess potential risks and connect people in crisis with support. Her work demonstrates why early reporting and coordinated intervention matter: they can protect the university community while helping individuals receive care before a situation escalates. Speaking with @NBCLA, USC Price Professor Marlon Boarnet explains how rising fuel costs squeeze an already slim-margin trucking industry—and what that could mean for consumers across the state. Could California’s proposed billionaire tax deliver lasting healthcare relief? The details matter. USC Price Professor Glenn Melnick weighs in on the proposal, cautioning that ballot measures can leave room for funds to be used differently over time. The debate raises questions about how much revenue would reach healthcare services, when it would arrive and how lawmakers would allocate it—with consequences for patients and providers across California. What prepares someone to solve public problems—and what can future leaders learn from those already doing the work? California State Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi joined Professor William Leach’s PPD 225 “Solving Public Problems” class at USC Price to discuss his path from civil rights attorney and school board leader to state legislator. Through student questions and reflections on his career, Muratsuchi explored how professional experience shapes legislative work and why varied perspectives matter in government. Who’s representing patients when the FDA reviews new drugs? USC Price Professor Genevieve Kanter is raising questions about industry ties that may go unseen. Her team’s study found that nearly 40% of FDA advisory committee meetings included a patient or consumer representative with active ties to a pharmaceutical industry-funded advocacy organization. Kanter says these relationships deserve closer scrutiny, as undisclosed ties could leave the public—and even the FDA—unaware of potential industry influence. A physician’s ability to help a patient depends on more than what happens in the exam room. 🩺 While working in Los Angeles clinics and hospitals, Albert Li saw how transportation, insurance and other barriers could keep patients from receiving care. Those experiences led him to pursue training on both sides of healthcare. Li is the first USC Price Master of Health Administration (MHA) student to simultaneously pursue a medical degree at the @KECKSchool_USC. He hopes to bring physicians and administrators closer together by understanding both patient needs and the systems that shape their care. 🔗 Read how Li is preparing to connect clinical care with health administration: priceschool.usc.edu/news/mas…
