In 2014, a naturalist and two historians posited a theory about a major zoological motif of the Indian subcontinent. ....that the Lion was a exotic alien brought to India around the time of Alexander's invasion over the Iranian Plateau. They published a book about it.

Pre-Columbus contacts with the New World across the oceans has been an on-off topic for many decades now. Lots of erratic datapoints from various places are available (check Wiki page for them). This paper brings another datapoint to that debate - I wouldn't be surprised if some Bronze Age seafarers made that journey.
Another "Portuguese crop exchange" factoid falls by the wayside - as a team of researchers find signatures of peanut compounds on 2500 year old pottery shards in South India. The team eliminated other contenders - like cinnamon, grapes - with absence criteria.

Nope, the team did not find the primary chemical biomarkers for cinnamon - cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and eugenol - on the potteries. Very thorough elimination.

It is only recent that the word "cyclone" was coined - in the 19th century based on the Greek word kýklos. The Indian term is cakravāta - चक्रवात.
Arnab, the first named storm of the 2026 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, made landfall in India early on Oct. 28, 2026, causing extensive damage. The NOAA-20 satellite captured this image of the storm prior to landfall on Oct. 27 at 1:42 a.m. local time.

Jorwe people (1400 BCE) obtained gold, ivory, and serpentine from Karnataka; they traded for copper ore from the Ahar culture in Rajasthan, or from Amreli district in Gujarat. Amazonite was obtained from Gujarat; hematite, marine fish, and shells were obtained from the Konkan coast. In exchange, Deccan Chalcolithic people were supplying pottery at the intra‐regional level. Copper and pottery were both supplied to Karnataka. Copper tools and ornaments were supplied to hunting‐gathering communities (Dhavalikar, 1981–1983; 1988–1989)

An ethnoarchaeological research finding from the Deccan Chalcolithic (2000 BCE) suggests that round dwellings were the residence of labourers while rectangular structures were the homes of landowners (Dhavalikar et al).

The intensity of environmental determinism in the Indian context is extremely high and it shows up in expected places - like Indo-China relations and some unexpected areas - like tax institutionalism. Passable terrain inside the subcontinent allows efficient state formation and rent extraction. The state is backed by the strongest possible factor - geography.

The Paṇi (पणि) of the RV might have a traceable signature. From the GenomeIndia (GI), we have counter-intuitive finding that H1 is strongly associated with ANI ancestry and IE speakers.
Looking at 23andme surname database, Vaishya castes seem to be heavy in y-haplogroup H1. I am talking about surnames like Gupta, Agarwal, Jain etc. Interesting.

We have a new 3-way correlation statement from the IndiaGenome project - y-haplos R1a, R2, H1 are positively correlated with ANI ancestry & Indo-European speakers. When these haplos show up in Dravidian speakers, the ASI ancestry of these speakers is negatively correlated.

H1 has been part of the BA interaction sphere and trade networks. nitter.cf/Ugra___/status/2063278…
H1 and R2 are found across the Iranian Plateau, Anatolia, West Asia and the Aegean. At trace levels in the Balkans. In Europe, none or close to zero. These regions are primarily the interaction sphere for the Neolithic and BA trade routes.

The Syēna form (falcon) is used in the Agnicayana Srauta rituals. It was famously documented by Frits Staal in Kerala (1975). The same form is a grapheme in the Indus Script (sign 83 in the IM77/IDF80 database). It has been found exclusively on 8 seals at Harappa & Mohenjodaro.

The art in this series of posts is "ligne claire" - a style pioneered by Georges Prosper Remi (Hergé), the famous Belgian creator of Tintin. To see it applied to the theme of IVC is infinite child-like joy.
The world's first great economic superpower was Indian, fed by the world’s greatest river system. Its key drivers were its ports. This area sustained the first long-haul trade network in history, lasting over a thousand years. Episode 3 of The True Cradle. 1/45 🧵

One of the consistent iconographic themes from the Indian Bronze to the Historic Age is the lack of a spatial ground plane in carvings, reliefs and stone work. The characters are floating in a non-perspective space and the observer's sense of meaning is derived subjectively.

Odysseus and the Cyclops. Following the return of figurative art in the preceding century, recognisable figures from known legends appear in Greece in the 7th century BC, such as on this sherd (c.670-650 BC) from Argos and slightly later figurine from a shrine at nearby Kourtaki.
