Cambridge Didn't Fail To Vet Jason Arday. It Built A System Designed Not To. Before anyone at Cambridge read a word of Jason Arday's published work, the university had already told the world what it was looking for. The job advert named "those with a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic background" as one of three groups the faculty was seeking, against a 2019 target to exceed the national benchmark for BAME professors. Candidates needed "a demonstrated ability to support equality, diversity and inclusion." Arday "ticked two of those three boxes." That is Cambridge's own published document, stating in writing that identity was a formal criterion for one of the most prestigious chairs in British academia, before a page of his thesis had been checked against anyone else's. What followed wasn't oversight. It was active suppression of the people who tried to do the checking Cambridge wouldn't. Evidence of plagiarism reached the university in 2023. It was dismissed. When Jack Grove, a journalist at Times Higher Education, asked basic questions about Arday's credentials, it triggered a four-month Metropolitan Police harassment investigation into him, with officers eventually warning him to stop contacting a professor whose CV he had merely asked to verify. When Dr David Harris, an academic reviewing Arday's research, pressed him on unexplained similarities to another scholar's work, Arday reported him to police too. The pattern is deliberate rather than accidental. Those red flags were raised, repeatedly, in writing, and each time, the institution's response was to weaponise the state against the people raising them rather than the man they concerned. Students paid the same price on a smaller scale. Several complained about inadequate supervision, sessions cut short, feedback withheld. More than one was told their complaint was itself a form of racism. One appealed a poor grade on grounds of failed supervision. The appeal was rejected. These were paying students, some carrying a lifetime of debt, whose reasonable complaints were treated as an attack on a protected hire rather than information Cambridge had a duty to act on. The panel explains why none of this triggered alarm. Six of the nine academics who interviewed him had publicly backed radical DEI positions, one arguing overseas student fees could be "tantamount to institutional racism," another arguing education should "disrupt, refuse, and displace liberal democratic principles." A source told the Telegraph the interviews felt like "going through the motions," since the panel had already decided who was getting the job. An ideologically uniform panel doesn't fail to spot fabrication by accident. It was never checking for it. It was checking for conformity, and Arday, self-taught, working-class, black, autistic, was the most conforming candidate the room had seen. The sharpest verdict comes from inside the community DEI claims to protect. Cambridge's own senior ethnic minority academics joined calls for an independent inquiry, warning the appointment "had the potential to destroy the modest progress Cambridge has made in addressing historical under-representation." They saw immediately what the university's leadership wouldn't say aloud: hiring an unqualified man for his skin colour doesn't honour the genuinely qualified minority scholars before him. It insults them, by suggesting their own achievements might have needed the same shortcut his did. The evidence supports a harder conclusion than Cambridge has admitted. Had Arday been white, he would have faced the scrutiny every academic candidate is meant to survive, scrutiny his actual work could not have withstood. He was never vetted because the institution had already decided, in its own job advert, that his race qualified him. Cambridge didn't fail to notice the fraud. It built a hiring process, a panel and a PR machine designed not to notice it, and when outsiders noticed anyway, it sent the police after them instead.

And prevention requires honesty about a pattern your government has consistently refused to name. A man in his thirties, a Somali national, pinned a man to the ground on a residential street and stabbed him repeatedly in the face and neck. Members of the public intervened with a hurling stick. A woman required hospital treatment for the stress of witnessing it. This happened in Northern Ireland, a place that has known more than its share of violence, and even there residents said they had never seen anything like it. Your government has presided over record small boat crossings. It has failed to proscribe the IRGC despite repeated promises. It has blocked the grooming gang inquiry for a year before being forced to concede it. It has spent £10 billion on asylum accommodation contracts. It has actively resisted measures that would have reduced the number of unvetted individuals entering and remaining in this country. The victims of these attacks are not statistics. They are British people, going about their lives on their own streets, who were failed before the attack happened. Failed at the border. Failed by a system that prioritises the rights of those who arrive illegally over the safety of those who were already here. Your thoughts are with the victim. So are ours. The difference is that thoughts are not policy. Thoughts do not secure borders. Thoughts do not remove individuals with no right to be here. Thoughts do not protect the next victim, whose name we do not yet know, on a street we cannot yet identify, from an attack that has not yet happened. How many more before the thoughts become action?
