Local 1 said a survey it conducted of members last year found that almost a third of its workers didn’t have the money to pay their rent or mortgage over the last year. A quarter had taken out payday or other short-term loans, the union said.
“Everything is going up,” said Ilene Brown, a housekeeper at the Hilton Chicago who voted to strike. “We have food prices and gas, and taking care of kids, and bills.”
Brown, who said she’d worked at the Hilton for 14 years, walked off the job with her coworkers back in 2018.
“It was exciting to see the union power we had,” she said. “It was exciting to see everybody come together and stand up for what we believe in.”

Today airline catering workers from across the country came to Chicago to confront Sky Chefs parent company Aurelius with the truth. Aurelius champions its Refugee Initiative while its own refugee and immigrant Sky Chefs workers face dangerous work conditions, unsafe workloads, and economic precarity.
Aurelius Group must end the hypocrisy.

Dawit Meles, a 20-year driver at Sky Chefs in Minneapolis & member of @UNITEHERE17, has a message for Aurelius Group.
“They should know that what Sky Chefs is doing is completely wrong. They shouldn’t say that they support certain groups of refugees and immigrants while ignoring what is happening to us. The quality of our jobs is getting worse and worse, and it seems like Sky Chefs and their owner Aurelius Group only care about profit. Not about our safety, not about whether we can earn enough, not about respecting us.”
