Kansas needs a Secretary of State who can earn public trust and do the work. @ScottMorganKS brings experience working for Bob Dole, Nancy Kassebaum and Gov. Mike Hayden, along with two terms on the Lawrence school board. In today’s Kansas Reflector, the United Kansas Party candidate outlines concrete priorities: ▪️ Strengthen protection of voter registration records. ▪️ Improve election audits. ▪️ Give county election officials the technical support they need. ▪️ Build public confidence through competent, accountable administration. His assessment of policymaking driven by election conspiracies: “Conspiracies are a lousy thing to make public policy on.” Pat Proctor, meanwhile, refused to answer the Reflector’s questions: “There’s not a chance in hell I’m answering questions for your paper.” Answering questions—including difficult questions from journalists—is part of seeking public office. Morgan also makes a straightforward case for giving Kansans another choice. His background and proposals deserve consideration on their merits. No political party owns your vote. 🗳️ Only citizens can vote in Kansas. That’s already the law. So why change the Constitution? United Kansas candidate for secretary of state Scott Morgan asks that question in today’s Topeka Capital-Journal. In 1918, Kansans voted nearly 3 to 1 to end voting eligibility for noncitizens. The “Every citizen” language we have today has served that purpose for more than a century. Now, a proposed amendment would replace that affirmative protection with language beginning: “No person shall be deemed a qualified elector unless…” Before rewriting our fundamental rights, lawmakers owe Kansans a clear explanation of what problem they’re solving. The amendment itself requires no new citizenship documents. But Scott raises a serious concern about whether its wording could be used to justify additional barriers for eligible citizens in the future. As Scott writes: “A constitution is not ordinary legislation, and we should not amend it merely because we can.” Protect every eligible citizen’s right to vote. Vote NO on the constitutional amendment November 3. A referee shouldn’t pick sides. Should the Secretary of State? In this video, @ScottMorganKS explains why he believes the person overseeing Kansas elections should be a neutral referee, putting voters ahead of political parties. Not Republican. Not Democrat. Something different. #Vote #KSSOS #KsLeg

Former Kansas Governor Mike Hayden is backing Scott Morgan for Secretary of State. Governor Hayden’s support reflects something at the heart of United Kansas: public service doesn’t have to be about party labels. It can be about experience, judgment, steady leadership, and putting Kansas first. Scott Morgan is offering Kansans something different — an approach focused on competent government and bringing people together. We’re proud to have Governor Hayden standing with Scott and the growing number of Kansans who believe there should be another choice. Not Republican. Not Democrat. He has also watched the changes in Kansas politics up close. Morgan remembers a Republican Party in which moderates and conservatives fought hard with each other, but still operated within the same broad coalition. What he sees now is something different. @UnitedKansas @ScottMorganKS

Fusion voting lets minor parties fight for the issues they care about without being labeled “spoilers” or forcing voters to choose between their values and their vote. When laws invalidate fusion nominations, they limit the freedom of candidates, parties, and voters to associate and organize around the causes they believe in. @UnitedKansas

Americans are increasingly open to fusion voting and PR—and that matters. A new @NPR report highlights growing support for changing how we elect our representatives. If voters want more choices and a stronger voice, it’s time to rethink a system built around two parties.

Kansas was once one of the most fusion-friendly states in America. Long before our modern political divisions hardened, Kansans regularly built coalitions across party lines. Republicans, Populists, independents, and reformers often united behind common candidates and common causes. Even Abraham Lincoln’s rise to the presidency depended on fusion politics, bringing together anti-slavery voters from different political movements who understood that principles matter more than party labels. By the 1890s, fusion politics was thriving in Kansas. It gave voters more choices, encouraged cooperation, and allowed political movements to grow without forcing people into one of two boxes. Then, in 1901, Kansas banned it. For more than a century, Kansans have been denied a political freedom that previous generations exercised openly. Voters can support multiple causes. Citizens can belong to multiple organizations. Groups can work together on shared goals. Yet political parties are uniquely restricted from jointly supporting the same candidate. That restriction remained largely unquestioned until 2024. Today, a legal challenge is asking a simple but important question: Does the Kansas Constitution protect the right of political association strongly enough to allow fusion politics once again? This is not really about Democrats or Republicans. It is not about left versus right. It is about whether Kansans are free to organize politically in the way they choose. The Kansas Constitution recognizes that political power originates with the people. Political parties are voluntary associations of citizens. If citizens wish to work together across traditional party lines, government should have a very good reason before telling them they cannot. Fusion voting is not a radical idea. It is not new. It is part of Kansas history. For decades, it helped shape our state. It encouraged coalition building, rewarded consensus, and gave voters more meaningful choices. Whether you agree with fusion voting or not, the constitutional question deserves serious consideration. Rights that disappear for 125 years are still rights worth examining. Sometimes progress is not about inventing something new. Sometimes it is about restoring something we lost. 🌻 Kansas once trusted its citizens to build political coalitions as they saw fit. Perhaps it is time to ask whether that trust should be restored. @FusionVoting #KsLeg #KsCourts

At no moment in American history has our winner-take-all districting system worked particularly well. There is no golden age of “fair districts.” The problems have been different at different times. The antiquated voting system that produces them has been there from the start.
I wrote a brief history of gerrymandering in America. It's always been bad. Just never THIS bad. (link below)
