A quick update on the San Juan River flood recovery: First, your tap water at home is completely safe to drink. While E. coli levels in the river are dropping, river and standing floodwaters are still NOT safe to touch or play in. 🧵👇 (1/3)

E. coli can remain in wet environments for several weeks. People helping with flood recovery should protect open wounds from contaminated water, practice proper hand hygiene, and wear personal protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection and mouth coverings. 5/6

🚨🚨 URGENT: CATASTROPHIC FLOODING EXPECTED ALONG THE SAN JUAN RIVER — EVACUATIONS UNDERWAY This is a potentially life-threatening situation across southeastern Utah. The National Weather Service has a FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MDT TUESDAY, with catastrophic flooding expected along the San Juan River between Four Corners and Mexican Hat. ⚠️ THIS IS A FLOOD EMERGENCY. The river is forecast to rise dramatically, with the crest expected around Aneth, Montezuma Creek and Bluff Sunday afternoon and evening. 📍 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: • The San Juan River near Bluff was at 19.6 feet at 9:30 AM Sunday. • Flood stage is 23 feet. • The river is forecast to crest at 43.6 FEET early Monday morning. • For perspective, the previous record crest was 32 feet in September 1927. The current forecast would exceed that historic level by more than 11 feet. Communities at risk include Bluff, Montezuma Creek, Aneth, Mexican Hat, Halchita and Tselakai Dezza. 🚧 ROAD CLOSURES AND EVACUATIONS The Navajo Department of Emergency Management reports that rising river levels are creating dangerous road conditions, and emergency crews are working to evacuate residents. Current closures include: * Highway 162 east of Montezuma Creek * Aneth Bridge (Texaco Road/Philips Camp Road Bridge) at Milepost 22, westbound * Navajo Route 35 south of Montezuma Creek * An additional closure west of Montezuma Creek may follow a bridge evaluation 🚫 NO DRONES: Drone flights are prohibited over or around the impacted areas because they can interfere with emergency operations. ‼️ PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. * Follow evacuation orders immediately. * Stay off the roads unless travel is essential. * Never drive or walk through floodwater. * Stay away from riverbanks and flooded bridges. * Keep roads clear for emergency responders. Even without additional rainfall expected, this flood wave will continue moving downstream, and dangerous conditions will persist. A river crest of 43.6 feet would be extraordinary and potentially devastating for communities along the San Juan River. Please share this post to help get the word out. October is Cybersecurity Month If you experience a cybersecurity attack: -Check your credit card and bank statements for unrecognizable charges. -Check your credit reports for any new accounts or loans you didn’t open. -Be alert for emails and social media users that ask for private information. -If you notice strange activity, limit the damage by changing all of your internet account passwords immediately. -Consider turning off the device that has been affected. -Take it to a professional to scan for potential viruses and remove any that they find. Remember: A company will not call you and ask for control of your computer to fix it. This is a common scam. -Let work, school or other system owners know what happened. -Run a security scan on your device to make sure your system is not infected or acting more slowly or inefficiently. -If you find a problem, disconnect your device from the Internet and perform a full system restore.

👀❄️Everyone stay calm, but there's white stuff falling out of the sky! Snow is already beginning to fall at high elevation mountain locations, as seen below from Snowbird webcams! This is just the beginning, however; expect more notable accumulations Monday-Wednesday. #utwx

Utah and SW Wyoming will see a relative lull in precipitation during the early evening. Coverage of rain will increase late this evening, spreading northward overnight. As Rachel's remnants move through Sunday, precipitation will be widespread throughout the day. #utwx #wywx

Keep following our @NWSSaltLakeCity friends, as well as local news for ongoing updates this weekend. Wildfire burn scars can remain hazardous for mudlides for at least 5 years. If you live below a burn scar and it's raining, don't let anyone sleep in the basement. #utwx
Widespread heavy rainfall expected late Saturday through early Monday as the remnants of now Tropical Storm Rachel move through Utah. Many streams, rivers and normally dry washes will be running high, consider alternate recreation plans and never drive through flood water. #utwx

Beaver and Piute counties were hit hard this summer. First by wildfire, then by devastating floods and mudslides that caused an estimated $47 million in damage to critical infrastructure. I'm grateful to President Trump and @fema for approving a major disaster declaration that will help these rural communities rebuild roads, restore water and power systems, and get back on their feet. We're committed to seeing this recovery through.

Tropical moisture will interact with a strong PNW system to bring widespread rain (snow >9,000 feet) to Utah and southwest Wyoming late Saturday through at least Tuesday. This will bring a heightened threat of flash flooding to at least central and southern Utah. #utwx #wywx
