The upper-level disturbance that will bring another day of widely scattered showers to Illinois tomorrow can be traced back to the remnants of Tropical Storm Vance in the eastern Pacific

14 years ago at this time, the eye of Sandy passed right over my house in Wilmington, DE. The howling winds and relentless rain made it the scariest weather event I’ve ever lived through. And then I’ll never forget, there was a moment where it was eerily calm and dare I say peaceful, just like people have always said about the eye. Shortly after that, in the middle of the night, the winds picked up and ripped from the opposite direction. My family grew up going to Seaside Heights, NJ for vacation. Seeing the devastation firsthand after Sandy - months later mind you - was surreal. Including the same roller coaster I rode that summer. Hurricane Sandy is one of the reasons meteorology went from hobby to career for me. Just knowing tangibly how much weather impacts all facets of our lives and how important it is to keep people safe.

A convection allowing model (CAM) should not need a convective parameterization scheme. Running a scheme at 3-4 km grid spacing is asinine, but the RRFS is *even worse* without one.

Excellent example of why it’s important to consider the observed storm motion. Bunkers RM yields largely crosswise horizontal vorticity in the 0-500 m layer. True storm motion (16kt to NW) reveals a much more streamwise flow in this layer.
TORNADO IN WEST TEXAS🌪️ Views of a likely tornado in West Texas earlier this evening! While there have been tornado warnings this evening, the primary threat across the region remains flooding. #TXwx

The first “viral”, or at least popularized in the main stream, El Niño event is best exemplified by this skit which aired on October 25, 1997. youtu.be/t_fGjrZfDt4?si=Wjp8…
Years ago the term "El Nino" was something mostly kept under wraps by meteorologists and weather enthusiasts and wasn't the headline in media to scare people. It was and now is and always will represent a normal weather pattern change that happens in some years.

A major driving force behind the planned discontinuation of the NAM and HREF models was to clear computing time for the upgraded GFS, which is now delayed by a year. I hope that @NOAA extends the lifetime of the NAM and HREF by a year since the GFS upgrade has been delayed. 1/6

I thought that clearing computing time and space for the to-be-upgraded GFS was one of the main drivers behind the NAM/HREF termination. Another reason to keep these models going

The NAM and HREF are admittedly old models and have their flaws, which are sometimes glaring, but experienced forecasters aware of the model biases can still use them effectively. Here's a recent example: nitter.cf/VORTEXJeff/status/2054… 5/6

Remember this bust in Arkansas last week? The NAM, WRF-ARW, and NSSL-WRF (HREF members) correctly did not convect, and probably kept this risk from being upgraded. The HRRR and RRFS did convect.

I am aware of the need for model developers to maintain legacy code on modern systems, but the year delay in the GFS upgrade means that useful guidance is being removed without a suitable replacement. The NAM and HREF should remain operational until the GFS is upgraded! 6/6

October 29, 2012: Hurricane Sandy made landfall as a massive post-tropical Category 1 in New Jersey. Impacts in the Northeast were devastating, ranging from storm surge to inland flooding to fires that burned entire neighborhoods. 160 people were killed in the US. #wxhistory

One year ago today - a magnum opus of satellite imagery
The Sentinel-2 satellite captured this image of Melissa's eye at peak intensity. 10m pixel resolution - one of the best satellite images ever captured of a hurricane of this intensity. Image from 16z this morning.
