I think it has to do with political fundraising which is highly centralized. Policies are framed to extract rent, which is easier to appropriate with fewer players. I wouldn't be surprised if one if the favored actors were not the principal beneficiary of their many businesses.
Twenty years ago, India’s markets were highly competitive. India’s skies were crowded with competition. Multiple airlines battled for every passenger, every route and every fare. A decade ago, multiple telecom operators were fighting on price.
Today, most of India’s major markets are captured by duopolies.
-Telecom is captured by Jio and Airtel.
-Aviation is captured by IndiGo and Air India.
-E-commerce by Flipkart and Amazon.
-Cab services by Ola and Uber.
-UPI by PhonePe and GPay.
-Travel booking by MakeMyTrip and Ixigo.
-Food delivery by Swiggy and Zomato.
-Quick commerce by Blinkit and Zepto.

The fundamental issue here is competition. In a capitalist market, competition creates wealth. Concentration destroys it. Over the last decade have hollowed out competition, allowing a handful of entities to accumulate disproportionate market power while consumers are left with fewer choices and weaker bargaining power. Much of this has happened under the watch, patronage and, at times blatant indulgence of the government of the day.

Yesterday, the BJP's socmedia handles thought it appropriate to post misogynistic, crude AI fake images in a bizarre attempt to denigrate a former President of the Congress Party, who is also a sitting Rajya Sabha member.
The fact that official ruling party handles posted these images right before BRICS is a national embarrassment. As major world leaders arrive in India, this is what you want to advertise — that the country's largest political party's media is run by women-hating trolls?
Meanwhile, let's take a closer look at what the BJP fears so greatly.
A genuine love story. A respectful partnership between a husband and wife who both loved India and wished for only the best for the country and the people. And a remarkably close, happy family.
The truth is a great defence against even the vilest of propaganda.
