On September 11, 2001, dogs served in different ways across the World Trade Center disaster โ searching rubble, detecting danger, and guiding people through smoke-filled stairwells to safety.
Apollo, an NYPD German Shepherd, searched the ruins of Ground Zero alongside rescue crews.
Bretagne, a young Golden Retriever with Texas Task Force 1, worked through dust, twisted steel, and devastation. Years later, she became widely remembered as the last known surviving 9/11 search-and-rescue dog.
Jake, a black Labrador who had once been abandoned and badly injured, grew up to become a certified search-and-rescue dog. After 9/11, he spent days working through the wreckage at Ground Zero.
Sirius, a Port Authority Police yellow Labrador trained to detect explosives, was inside the World Trade Center that morning. His handler, Officer David Lim, secured him before rushing to help others evacuate.
Lim survived.
Sirius did not.
He became known as the only police dog killed in the 9/11 attacks.
And then there were Roselle and Salty.
They werenโt searching the rubble.
They were guide dogs.
Roselle helped her blind handler, Michael Hingson, escape from the 78th floor of the North Tower.
Salty helped his blind handler, Omar Rivera, descend from the 71st floor.
Through darkness, noise, fear, crowded stairwells, and chaos, they kept moving.
Six dogs.
Six very different stories.
Search dogs. Police dogs. Guide dogs.
None of them knew the meaning of terrorism.
None understood why that morning had changed America forever.
They simply did what they had been trained to do โ and stayed beside the people who depended on them.
More than two decades later, their names still deserve to be remembered.
Apollo. Bretagne. Jake. Sirius. Roselle. Salty.
They searched.
They guided.
They served.

Today, among thousands of people crossing the Mackinac Bridge, I watched two firefighters in full gear running that bridge carrying flags.โจ๐บ๐ธโจ
And something about it hit me differently.
Carrying the weight of their gear, carrying those flags and carrying something much bigger than either.
A reminder, there are people who willingly carry heavy things so the rest of us don't have to.
It honestly did something to my heart.
We get so caught up in arguing,
complaining, judging, and worrying about things that won't matter someday.

Tonight, 2,977 lights rose above New York Harbor, representing every person killed in the September 11 attacks.
The aerial artwork originated from Governors Island and illuminated the sky beside the Tribute in Light ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. It was developed in conjunction with representatives of the families, survivors and responder community.
A powerful tribute to 2,977 lives that will never be forgotten ๐๏ธ๐บ๐ธ

She escaped the 87th floor of the North Tower, covered in ash.
A photographer captured her as she fled for her life.
Seventeen years later, she invited him to photograph her wedding.
This is the story of Joanne Capestro.
September 11, 2001 / 8:46 a.m.
On an ordinary Tuesday morning, Joanne Capestro sat at her desk on the 87th floor of the North Tower, going about the rhythm of her workday.
And then,
The world above her exploded.
American Airlines Flight 11 tore into the building just floors above her head, the impact so violent it threw her forward. The lights flickered, the ceiling trembled, and smoke began pouring down from the impact zone.
Alarms screamed.
People shouted.
Fear filled every breath.
Joanne didnโt wait for instructions.
She ran.
Eighty-seven floors. One chance to live.
She and her coworkers pushed into the stairwell, a narrow, dim, choking tunnel that became the only path between life and death.
For more than an hour, Joanne descended step by step, floor by floor. She didnโt know if the stairs beneath her would collapseโฆ or if flames from above would swallow the tower whole.
People cried.
People prayed.
Strangers held each other upright.
In that stairwell, humanity became a lifeline.
Every minute mattered.
Every step was a borrowed heartbeat.
And then, finally, Joanne reached the street.
A city coated in death and dust
When she stepped outside, she was unrecognizable.
Her hair was stiff with debris.
Her clothes were drained of color.
Her skin had turned gray.
New York looked like a battlefield. The air was thick with ash, what she would later learn was not just dust, but pulverized concrete, steel, glassโฆ and the remains of the world sheโd just escaped.
But she was alive.
9:59 a.m., the South Tower falls.
A roar tore through the streets. The South Tower collapsed, sending a wall of ash and debris crashing toward her like a tidal wave.
Joanne ran.
And somewhere in that chaos, a photographer lifted his camera.
His name was Phil Penman.
He captured Joanne and her coworker walking through the storm, ashen, blank-faced, alive but shattered. A portrait of shock, survival, and a world on fire.
Joanne had no idea her image had been taken.
Phil had no idea who she was.
29 minutes later, the North Tower fell
Had Joanne been even a few minutes slowerโฆ
Had one stair been blockedโฆ
Had one moment gone differentlyโฆ
She would have been inside when her building came crashing down.
The story behind the ash
Joanneโs story is not just a photograph.
Itโs a reminder of every survivor who walked out of that cloud, carrying invisible wounds:
the trauma
the grief
the health battles from toxic dust
the endless, haunting question,
Why did I live when so many didnโt?
Today, Joanne speaks publicly, honoring the 2,977 lives lost and the survivors forever changed.
Because the ash that covered her was not just dust.
It was the remains of everything that collapsed around her, buildings, friends, coworkers, a world before 8:46 a.m.
And still, she lived.
She kept going.
She rebuilt.
She found joy again.
The woman covered in ash in Phil Penmanโs photograph is the same woman smiling in her wedding portrait.
Two moments.
Two worlds.
One life that refused to end in the ruins.
We remember 9/11 for those who died.
But we also remember for those who lived,
people like Joanne Capestro, who walked down 87 floors of fear and stepped out into a lifetime of healing.
Survival was her first miracle.
Living, fully, bravely, became her second.

It was revealed that Dolly Parton was secretly battling cancer but she didn't say anything and instead released this song as one of her last to raise funds for children with cancer. Even while she was sick she was still thinking about others. Iโm absolutely devastated.
