Rebekah stared at Stefan for a moment, completely dumbfounded, before letting out a bitter laugh. Slowly, she crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. โOh, Stefan. You really are a pathetic little hypocrite as soon as your wounded ego gets the better of you.โ She took a step closer and looked him straight in the eyes with a mocking smile. โYou claim you donโt want me, that youโre completely indifferent to me, and yet you almost lose your mind the moment I mention your brotherโs name. How incredibly interesting.โ Rebekah tilted her head slightly. โAnd just to be clear: Iโm not with Damon because Iโm desperate. Iโm with him because I love him. Because he makes me laugh, because he challenges me, and because he isnโt constantly trying to punish me with memories of a relationship long past.โ
At his remark about Katherine, her expression darkened. โAnd Katherine had more class? Really, Stefan? Is that all you can come up with? Using another woman to insult me? But hey, maybe she wants you back, so Iโd suggest you go to Katherine.โ She snorted contemptuously. โYou can think whatever you want about me. But donโt you dare dismiss my feelings for Damon as a desperate attempt to make you jealous.โ
For a brief moment, her mocking smile faded. โYou know, I actually loved you once. Back in the โ20s. And maybe back then, there was nothing I wanted more than for you to choose me again.โ She held his gaze. โBut that Rebekah is gone now.โ
Finally, she stepped aside and cleared the way for him. โSo go on, Stefan. Run to your bourbon, to your guilt, or whatever else you want to blame for your problems right now.โ A final, almost malicious grin flashed across her lips.

Rebekah had resolved not to start a fight with her brother todayโfor once. A resolution that, in this family, was probably already considered an extraordinary display of self-control. With a glass in her hand, she walked into the living room and spotted Hayley on the sofa. Rebekah paused in the doorway and studied her for a few seconds. โPlease tell me youโre hiding from Nik.โ An amused smile flitted across her lips as she walked toward Hayley. โBecause if thatโs the case, Iโd love to join you. Iโve heard enough from my brother today that Iโd gladly pretend to be deaf for the next hundred years.โ
Rebekah plopped down next to Hayley on the sofa and set her glass on the table. โYou know, sometimes I really wonder how you put up with this family.โ She paused briefly and let her lips curl into a small grin. โBut then I remember that youโre just as stubborn, irritable, and completely unfazed as the rest of us.โ She leaned back and looked at Hayley from the side. โThat was a compliment, by the way.โ
Rebekah blinked once and then slowly raised an eyebrow. โOh, maybe you should explain it that way to Nik, too. At the word โclaim,โ his ego would probably jump to the conclusion that two ancient beings are arguing over who has a claim on him.โ A soft, amused laugh escaped her. โAlthough I have to admit that explains a lot. If Vladis is the origin of the vampires and youโre the origin of the werewolves, then Nik carries the legacy of both of you within him, so to speak.โ She tilted her head slightly as her gaze grew more pensive. โWhich probably means that my dear brother is descended, of all things, from two sides of a family thatโs apparently even more complicated than our own. โHeโd probably like that.โ A mischievous grin flitted across her lips.
โBut donโt worry, I get it. Forebears, not owners.โ
โWell, at least youโre smart enough to know when itโs better not to ask questions.โ She crossed her arms over her chest, but her curiosity had long since been piqued.
โIf Ash can actually hold his own against your oldest brother, though, I understand why even a proud wolf would be cautious.โ A faint grin flitted across her lips. โAnd believe me, I know the difference between pride and stupidity all too well. Iโve spent a thousand years with my brother Nik.โ

Action speak louder than words.
Rebekah leaned against the wall for a moment after Stefan let go of her. Then, completely unfazed, she ran her hand over her neck and watched him go with a look that was somewhere between anger and amused astonishment. โYou really are unbelievable, Stefan.โ With vampire speed, she was suddenly standing in front of him again, blocking his path. โFirst of all: Touch me like that one more time, and Iโll show you the difference between a vampire and an Original.โ A sweet smile flitted across her lips. โSecond: Just because things arenโt working out with Elena doesnโt mean you suddenly have a claim on me.โ She crossed her arms. โAnd since youโre so eager to find out who the unlucky guy isโฆโ Her smile became almost mischievous. โDamon.โ Rebekah let a brief moment pass, just to savor Stefanโs reaction. โYes. Your brother.โ She stepped closer and tapped his chest with a finger. โIโm dating Damon. And before you convince yourself that Iโm only doing this to make you jealous: The world doesnโt revolve around you, Stefan Salvatore.โ
When he invited her to shower with him, she finally laughed dryly. โNice try. But if I want to see a Salvatore naked, I already know exactly which one Iโll go to.โ
Rebekah had firmly resolved to spend this evening in peace. A glass of bourbon. No family. No witches. No men who thought they could make her life even more complicated.
Then she heard that voice. Of course, โSalvatore.โ
Rebekah rolled her eyes even before she turned to face @diabolicalslvtr . Her gaze slowly swept over him before she exhaled with a gesture of annoyance. โI should have known that a pleasant evening was too much to ask for.โ
Rebekah watched as Stefan calmly poured himself a bourbon and simply rolled her eyes at his little charade. โOh, Stefan. How convincing.โ She crossed her arms over her chest. โYou donโt like me, but here you are, of your own free will, in my house, drinking my bourbon, and suddenly wanting to talk about our past together.โ A dry laugh escaped her. โYou used to be a better liar.โ But when he mentioned the 1920s and their love back then, her amused smile vanished. Not out of hurtโbut rather out of disinterest. โThe โ20s?โ Rebekah shrugged. โIโm not interested in that time anymore.โ She stepped closer and, without hesitation, took the bourbon bottle from his hand to pour herself a drink. โYes, I remember us. I remember that I loved you. And maybe your little charade would even have impressed me back then.โ She took a sip and then looked at Stefan with complete composure. โBut that was back then.โ
A confident smile flitted across her lips. โIโm with someone else now.โRebekah raised her glass pointedly. โHereโs to someone whoโs a better match for me. To someone who doesnโt constantly remind me of what could have been between us a hundred years ago.โ She tilted her head and looked Stefan straight in the face. โSo if you came here to throw me off balance with memories of our great love, darling, then youโre about a century too late.โ Rebekah walked past him, deliberately brushing against his shoulder. โYou must really miss the 1920s.โ A satisfied grin followed. โI donโt miss them.โ

Rebekahโs eyebrows shot up immediately. โOf course he does.โ She laughed softly, almost in disbelief. โA living blade thatโs also his soul and knows more about him than he does himself. Just when I thought your family couldnโt possibly get any more complicated.โ
But her mocking tone quickly gave way to genuine curiosity. Rebekah crossed her arms and studied Crimsonfang intently. โBut if this blade is actually a part of Coleโhis soulโthen that means this knowledge already exists somewhere within him. Itโs just that Cole himself doesnโt have access to it yet.โ She tilted her head thoughtfully. โAnd it hasnโt revealed itself to him yet.โ There was a brief pause.
โWhy?โ

Rebekah closed the door behind Stefan and watched him go with a raised eyebrow. โNo โthank youโ?โ She cast a meaningful glance over her shoulderโtoward where he had walked past herโand then back at him.
โAnd then you bump into me, too. Your manners have really gone downhill, Stefan.โ
Rebekah leaned against the doorframe and eyed Stefan for a few seconds, one eyebrow raised. โDid you say โpleaseโ?โ An amused smile played on her lips. โHow polite of you, Stefan. Itโs almost as if you suspect Iโd otherwise slam the door in your face.โ She let him wait a moment longer before finally stepping aside to make room for him. โAll right, then. Come inโ
