On August 10, a 7.4-magnitude #earthquake struck #Colombia ’s Chocó department, damaging infrastructure and disrupting access to safe drinking #water. In response, the Veoliaforce LATAM Hub carried out its first field deployment alongside the Veolia Foundation and Action Against Hunger: 🔹 Two Aquaforce mobile water treatment units, pre-positioned in Cartagena, were dispatched to Quibdó. 🔹Seven Veoliaforce volunteers from Colombia, Chile and Brazil are mobilized for this mission: after five volunteers assessed local needs and produced drinking water in Nóvita and Unión Panamericana, two remain on the ground to train local technicians to operate the Aquaforce units. 🔹 The response is being coordinated with local and international partners to provide support where it is needed most. 💧 What if securing access to #water were also a matter of national security? In the Middle East, desalination plants are critical infrastructure, supplying water to communities, agriculture, and industry. In the United Kingdom, two-thirds of the country faced drought conditions this summer, at a cost of more than £1 billion. In her latest @BBC interview, our CEO @E_Brachlianoff highlights several concrete solutions: 🔹 using artificial intelligence to pinpoint leaks and direct investment where it is most urgently needed; 🔹 reusing treated wastewater, as in Jordan, where it supplies 75% of the water used for irrigation; 🔹 developing desalination where necessary and recycling water for data centers instead of drawing on natural freshwater resources. These are not solutions for the distant future. They are already being deployed around the world. In 2025 alone, #Veolia’s activities helped save 1.574 billion cubic meters of freshwater. In the #UK and beyond, the next step is to scale them up: target investment, modernize infrastructure, and diversify water supplies before restrictions become unavoidable. Restoring land, strengthening resilience: as environmental challenges become increasingly interconnected, our responses must be systemic. At #COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, UNCCD discussions highlighted the close links between land degradation, drought, water, biodiversity and climate change. These challenges are interconnected: protecting natural resources also depends on how territories and ecosystems are managed. This means taking a holistic approach to water use, while considering the needs of communities, nature and economic activities. This is the approach that Catherine Chevauché, Nature Director at Veolia, shared during the event, while also bringing the perspective of French businesses to the discussions through #EPE "Soil and Land in a changing world" publication. 🤝 Standing with #Colombia Following the devastating #earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, our thoughts are with our colleagues, their families, and all those affected in Valle del Cauca and Caldas. Since the emergency began, @Veolia_Co has been present on the ground, accompanying affected territories and coordinating with authorities and communities. Our teams have maintained uninterrupted water, waste collection, and industrial services while conducting comprehensive safety assessments at operational bases and administrative offices. More than 1,000 employees continue working to support recovery efforts.
