The future of healthcare isn't about replacing GPs; it is about enabling every professional to contribute their unique skills.
GPs bring the distinctive expertise of medical generalism, providing unrestricted first-contact medical care, expert clinical judgement under uncertainty and clinical synthesis.
Successful neighbourhood health services depend on strong general practice.
Proud to launch our @RCGP vision for neighbourhood and community health.

I am delighted that the @rcgp has published its first dedicated research strategy, setting out a roadmap to strengthen research in and for general practice.
General practice is built on curiosity, critical thinking and lifelong learning. Research helps us ask better questions, generate better evidence and improve care for our patients.
Looking forward to working with colleagues and partners to strengthen research, scholarship and clinical academic careers across our profession.

Thank you to the Westminster Health Forum for the opportunity to discuss the future NHS workforce today.
As healthcare becomes more complex, the unique role of GPs becomes even more important: medical generalism, managing undifferentiated illness and multimorbidity, integrating physical, psychological and social factors, balancing competing priorities, and making decisions under uncertainty. These are capabilities that will become even more valuable as healthcare evolves.

The work of the @rcgp extends far beyond headlines. Every week we engage with ministers, NHS leaders, regulators, parliamentarians and partners, contribute to national policy, support our members and advocate for high-quality patient care.

Pleased to be quoted in today’s Academy of Medical Royal Colleges submission to DSIT on children growing up in the online world.
We need to move beyond simplistic “screen time” debates and recognise the cumulative impact of harmful content, exploitation, persuasive platform design and compulsive use on children’s mental health, sleep, learning and development.
This is a public health issue.

The “modern doctor” is still grounded in patient care, but the role extends further. Evidence and research feel more important than ever in guiding decisions, shaping policy, and making sure advocacy is credible as well as impactful.

On Monday I gave evidence to the Childhood Vaccinations Committee alongside @doctor_katie (BMA) and Kim Ball (RCN), and we were aligned.
General practice is still the backbone of childhood immunisation. The model works. Falling uptake isn’t failure; it’s pressure.
The answer isn’t redesign, it’s support: more capacity, targeted investment, better data, and trusted communication.
With the right backing, general practice can deliver.
New analysis from @TheKingsFund shows many patients still struggle with NHS administration and communication.

This reflects what GPs see every day.
Improving access requires a system that is clearer and easier to navigate, as described in the @rcgp's joint report with The Patients Association "Solving the maze" bing.com/search?q=%20the%20m….

The number of GP practices in England fell from 7,686 in 2015 to 6,359 in 2025, while the number of homes rose by around 2m over the same period
As a result, the number of homes served per average GP practice rose from 3,066 in 2015 to 3,976 in 2025.

We must ensure there is not an 'evaluation gap' between the marketing of AI tools and evidence of their impact in clinical practice. Regulatory frameworks should incentivise participation in evaluation and research projects rather than mandating adoption of unproven technology.
General practice now accounts for 8.3% of NHS spend, the lowest in a decade.

As we work towards shifting care into the community, resources must follow.
A clear commitment to both increasing investment in general practice and publishing transparent, annual data on general practice and primary care funding is needed to demonstrate progress and build confidence in this direction.

New research in The BMJ reveals a major transparency gap in post-authorisation drug studies. bmj.com/content/392/bmj-2025…
Many studies required by regulators aren’t fully reporting protocols or results publicly despite existing EU rules.
Why it matters:
Transparency = trust, accountability, and better patient outcomes.
If regulators mandate studies, the evidence shouldn’t stay hidden.
Time to close the gap between policy and practice.

Workload and funding: nationwide cross-sectional study of general practices in England bjgp.org/content/early/2026/…
New BJGP study examining GP workload and funding
finds current funding only partially reflects drivers of workload, particularly morbidity and deprivation, with wide variation between practices.
Aligning funding more closely with need would require substantial uplift, underlining the scale of the gap.
A technical issue on the surface, but with clear implications for equity and sustainability in primary care.
