4-3-3 In possession vs 5-4-1
- ST plays as the 3rd CAM
- FB underlap to threaten
- Winger to face forward
This is my first tactical article in a while. I'm hoping to make this more regular!

We look to establish an understanding of tactical principles and how we might go about applying them!
Different ideas to progress the ball
- Rollout to face forward
- Rollout to remove the 6
- CDM joining the 1st line
Different ways to affect the last line
- 1 ST wide CBs can jump
- 2 STs CBs less likely to jump
- Vs man oriented back line exploit the jump
5-3-2 basic movements & out of possession
- Different ways to defend wide areas
- Different ways to threaten and progress the ball
4-2-3-1 in possession freeing a midfielder vs a 4-4-2
- 6's create space for one another
- 10 rolls out when the midfielder jumps
Wide triangle rhythms from a 4-3-3 with narrow full backs
- Midfielder dropping deeper -> full back exploits the blindside
- Midfielder rolls out -> winger threatens

Watching back old games this set up made me think of the concept of exploiting man oriented pressure in specific ways
How the 6's position themselves in relation to their direct oppent can create space in specefic ways
Stretch the 6's -> Play off the front

How to Beat the Press When the Winger Jumps
Monaco’s fullback plays forward, then keeps moving. As Toulouse’s pressing winger follows the ball with his attention, the fullback runs free to combine and receive again facing forward—with four teammates ahead of him

It can be difficult to depict, but here we are showing two different approaches to breaking down a low block
1. Exploiting the player who jumps
2. Creating dynamic rhythms to unbalance the defense
More and more we see attacking players joining the 1st line and/or a player from the 1st line arriving in a position to progress the ball
How One Blind-Side Run Creates a 2v1
Monaco’s No. 8 moves onto the blind side of Toulouse’s advancing fullback, creating a 2v1 against the central midfielder.
If that midfielder steps out, the centre-back must react to the same cue—or risk leaving a player free between the lines. It’s not just about creating an overload. It’s about the decision you force the next defender to make.

One way to create 3 CAMs in possession in build up
Monaco’s midfield diamond leaves one holding midfielder underneath three No. 10s. When Toulouse’s midfielders step out to press, the opportunity is to exploit the space they leave centrally.
